2022 Elite 90 Honoree Clipped by No. 58 Bolton of UCLA
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - In a matchup of two extremely talented competitors, No. 47 Kit Gulihur was clipped by No. 58 Elysia Bolton, 5-7, 2-6, in the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles Championship Round of 64 Monday, May 23.
Gulihur came in as the reigning ASUN Player of the Year and NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Elite 90 honoree, while Bolton is a three-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American selection and was the Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year in 2019.
The first set carried a lot of weight and came down to a few close points late in the frame. With Gulihur trailing, 5-4, Gulihur broke serve to even the set up before Bolton created her own break to take the 6-5 lead.
Gulihur nearly pulled off an amazing rally after being down 40-0 and facing four set points in favor of Bolton, tying up the game. But, Bolton held off Gulihur to take the opening session, 7-5.Â
The same theme ensued in the second set, with both sides breaking serve before Bolton ran away with the last four games after holding a 2-1 advantage.Â
The season is not done for Gulihur as Ana Paula Melilo joins Gulihur in the doubles championships round of 32 tomorrow.
