DIAMOND PREVIEW: Softball Travels for Doubleheader Against Georgia Southern

4/19/2022 12:00:00 PM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida softball (35-11) will take on its last non-conference opponent of the regular season when it plays a midweek doubleheader on the road against Georgia Southern (9-24) on Wednesday.

The Ospreys have won nine of their last 10 games, including three straight-ASUN series sweeps against Central Arkansas, Jacksonville and Kennesaw State. The only loss in the month of April was to No. 20 UCF in a one-run game at home.

UNF has been consistent with their lineup recently, as they have used the same batting order for the past six games. Paige Pfent, Kayla Harper and Shannon Glover are also the only three players that have played and started in all 46 games this season.

WHAT TO KNOW

- Morgan Clausen has been one of the steady arms for the Ospreys this year with a 1.21 ERA in 24 appearances. She's recently been the "closer" down the stretch with three saves in the last five games and six total saves on the season, which leads the ASUN.

- Halle Arends continues to rack up the wins and strikeouts in the circle with 16 wins, which ranks first in the conference, and 125 total strikeouts, which leads the team. She has recorded five or more strikeouts in eight of her past nine appearances with a 1.53 ERA this season.

- Erin Kyle is another trustworthy arm for UNF with a 1.77 ERA that ranks third in the conference, only behind her teammates Clausen and Arends. Izzy Kelly also has put together quality innings with a 2.88 ERA in 10 appearances.

- Pfent leads the team in average (.358), hits (49) and RBI (30), while also sharing the lead for home runs with three other players at five each. She's currently on a five-game hitting streak with a run scored in each of her last four games.

- Harper is coming off a fantastic weekend where she tied the program D-I record for most drawn walks in a game with four, while also matching the record the most steals in a game on the same day with three total. She had two hits and four runs against KSU while starting at center field in the leadoff spot for all 46 games on the year.

OPPONENT NOTES

  • Georgia Southern is 9-24 overall with a 4-11 record in Sun Belt play during their 2022 campaign. They have lost eight of their last nine games, but do have a win against No. 23-ranked UL-Lafayette in a doubleheader game from earlier this year. Their only common opponent on the schedule is a loss at Jacksonville, whereas the Ospreys swept them at their place earlier this month. Janai Conklin and Faith Shirley are the only two batters for the Eagles that have an average over .280, with Conklin leading the team at .342 and Shirley right behind at .337. They have 56 hits combined with 40 RBI, 25 runs, 13 home runs and four stolen bases. On the pitching side, their top player in the circle is Rylee Waldrep, who has posted a 4.81 ERA so far this season with seven complete games in 16 starts. Kastin Belogorska leads the team in strikeouts with 46 total, while Waldrep is within distance with 44.
    • UNF leads in the overall series against the Eagles, 15-5, with their last meeting being a 3-2 win on February 27, 2021, in Jacksonville, Fla.
