Bats Blow Open 17-10 Sunday Slugfest Win Against Boston College

Ospreys Score Most Runs in a Game Since 2017

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sunday's series finale between North Florida baseball and Boston College (4-5) saw a staggering 16 pitchers sent to the mound, but the Ospreys did that total one tally better with a 17-run explosion in UNF's 17-10 slugfest triumph against BC March 6.

UNF opened up a 7-0 lead after the second inning before Boston College cut the deficit to 7-6 thanks to a grand slam to dead center in the fifth. North Florida replied to outscore the Eagles 10-4 the rest of the way.

North Florida (3-10) evidently likes to hit against Boston-based opponents as the Ospreys scored their most runs since February of 2017 against Northeastern. Additionally, UNF put up its most hits in a game since Feb. 26 of last season at The Citadel.

It was North Florida's first win against an ACC team at home since defeating Florida State, 3-1, April 6, 2010. UNF tallied its most runs against a Power Five team since scoring 17 against Mississippi State Feb. 23, 2008. The win gives North Florida a home-victory against a Power Five team in three of the last four years, having defeated Missouri twice in 2019, Ohio State in 2020 and the Eagles today.

UNF did its damage thanks to 17 hits, with eight of the nine starting batters tallying at least one. Cade Westbrook led the charge, posting four hits, four runs and two RBI. Dallen Leach put up a four-RBI day, including a three-run home run in the first inning. Aidan Sweatt also scored four times and collected three hits and two RBI.

The game featured three different innings in which at least four runs were scored. All told, Boston College used 11 hurlers, with UNF utilizing five.

Clayton Boroski had the longest outing of any pitcher on the day, going 3.2 innings while allowing one unearned run and fanning seven.

Behind the Line Score
  • North Florida jumped all over Boston College in the first, going up 4-0 as the first five batters reached safely. Isaiah Byars singled, Aidan Sweatt was hit by a pitch and Cade Westbrook laced an RBI single to center. One batter later, Dallen Leach took a 3-2 fastball over the fence in left, giving UNF a 4-0 lead.
  • UNF tacked on another thanks to an RBI double from Drew Leinenbach.
  • UNF put up another crooked number in the second. Byars and Westbrook laced consecutive doubles and Brock Edge singled through the right side to give UNF a 7-0 lead.
  • BC got on the board in the fourth. A throwing error, stolen base and RBI double down the left field line plated one.
  • Two hit batters, a walk, double and a grand slam to dead center got BC within one at 7-6 in the fifth.
  • Leinenbach rolled a double inside the third base bag, moved to third on Tyler Gerteisen's bunt single and Byars plated Leinenbach with a sac fly to right. UNF moved its lead to 8-6 in the fifth on that sequence.
  • An additional three runs came across in the fifth. A wild pitch scored one, Leach drove in one with a single and Edge executed the safety squeeze.
  • UNF blew things open thanks to five runs in the sixth, all coming with two outs. Aidan Sweatt chopped a two-RBI single up the middle, making it 13-6. A wild pitch resulted in another, and on the same play the BC catcher's errant throw to home allowed Westbrook to score. Another wild pitch plated Leach.
  • BC scored two in the seventh, making it 16-8 UNF. Three-straight singles and a sac fly gave BC two.
  • Sweatt and Westbrook continued their hot day in the eighth. Sweatt singled, Westbrook doubled and a wild pitch scored Sweatt.
  • BC didn't go away, scoring two in the top of the ninth on an RBI single and sac fly that Edge grabbed at the top of the left field wall. His catch saved a potential three more runs from scoring.
  • The two teams combined to use 16 different pitchers.
