DIAMOND PREVIEW: Softball Travels For ASUN Opener at FGCU

3/12/2022 2:30:00 PM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida softball (19-5) opens up ASUN competition on the road when it takes on Florida Gulf Coast in a doubleheader on Sunday, followed by a single game on Monday, at the FGCU Softball Complex.

The Ospreys sprint into conference play on a 11-game winning streak, with nine of those 11 games being shutout performances. The pitching staff is fresh off a streak of 56 consecutive scoreless innings pitched, which set a new program record in its Division I history.

UNF will also be looking for their first regular-season win at FGCU since Mar. 27, 2010, and their first regular-season series win against the Eagles since the 2017 season.

WHAT TO KNOW

- Halle Arends is fresh off a no-hitter performance against Tennessee State this past Wednesday, as well as a combined one hit, no runs allowed, and 12 strikeouts in two relief appearances from the Holy Cross doubleheader on Tuesday. She leads the ASUN in wins through non-conference play and looks to continue her hot streak in Fort Myers.

- Morgan Clausen and Erin Kyle have also been dominant in the circle for the Ospreys with ERAs of 0.63 and 1.93 respectively. Clausen's ERA leads all pitchers in the ASUN, while Arends' and Kyle's ERAs both rank in the top four in the conference.

- Paige Pfent leads the team in batting average (.386), hits (27), doubles (6), total bases (44), and a share of the team-high for home runs with three. She blasted home runs in back-to-back games this weekend and will look to make it a third straight game against FGCU on Sunday.

- Kayla Harper continues to go fast around the bases with two inside-the-park home runs in the past week, along with 17 runs and 14 stolen bases this year, which both rank in the top 10 of the ASUN. She also is one of three players for the Ospreys to start and play in all 24 games this season, as well as one of four plays to be hitting .300 or better on more than 40 at bats.

- Shannon Glover has been one of the most consistent hitters on the team with a .315 BA, 13 RBIs and 10 runs in 24 games started. She joins Pfent and Harper as the only players on the team with over .300 BA in 70 or more at bats, start all 24 games, and record more than 20 hits through non-conference play.

- Savannah Channell has a knack for getting on base this season with an OB% of .396, which is the second-highest on the team behind Pfent. She only has seven hits this season, but has forced a team-high 14 walks in 39 at bats.

OPPONENT NOTES

  • Florida Gulf Coast is 7-16 through their non-conference schedule this season with key wins over No. 8 Texas, as well as Boston College. They have lost their last 11 games after playing the likes of Rutgers, Notre Dame, USF, UCF, and South Carolina. Cana Davis is the top hitter for the Eagles with a .446 batting average (25-for-56), as well as 15 RBI, 10 runs, three home runs, and a .516 on-base percentage. Ally Hulme is the ace pitcher for FGCU with over 59 innings pitched, which almost doubles the player with the second-most IP. She's put together a 3.05 ERA with five wins in 13 appearances, including two complete games, and 45 strikeouts.
    • UNF trails in the overall series against the Eagles, 23-13, with their last meeting being a 3-2 loss on Apr. 3, 2021, in Jacksonville, Fla.
