FORT WORTH, Texas - North Florida men's golf sophomore Nick Gabrelcik has been named to the watch list for the 2022 Ben Hogan Award presented by PNC Bank, as announced by the Hogan Trophy Award Foundation, the Friends of Golf and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) on Tuesday afternoon.
Gabrelcik is one of 30 golfers that will be in consideration for this year's award, as well as one of six underclassmen. He is one of six players that was named a semifinalist for this award in 2021, as well as one of three candidates that is not from a Power Five athletic institution.
The Ben Hogan Award annually awards the top men's NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA or NJCAA college golfer based on all collegiate, amateur and professional events over the previous 12 months. Three of the top four players in the Official World Golf Ranking—No. 1 Jon Rahm (2015, 2016), No. 3 Viktor Hovland (2019) and No. 4 Patrick Cantlay (2012)—are past recipients of the honor, while No. 2 Collin Morikawa (2018, 2019) was a two-time finalist.
The 10 semifinalists for this honor will announced on Friday, Apr. 15, and then the three finalists for the award on Thursday, May 5. The finalists will attend a black-tie dinner on Monday, May 23, at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, where the winner will be crowned.
Gabrelcik has put on an impressive start to his 2021-22 campaign, as he has put together three top-10 finishes at four events played, including an individual title at the Sea Best Invitational in January. He also just recently finished tied for fourth in the PGA Jones Cup with a score of 2-over 218 (68-76-74).
He has averaged a score of 70.00 through 12 rounds played so far this season, with his best round being 5-under 65 in the final round of Sea Best at TPC Sawgrass. Through four events with a total of 12 rounds being played, he has ended three of those tournaments and nine of those rounds under par.
