Five Things: Softball Heads to UCF, Hosts Home Games

JACKSONVILLE - North Florida softball heads to UCF Wednesday before returning home to host Florida A&M, USC Upstate, Buffalo and Georgia State beginning Friday.

Home softball games are closed to the public. Admission is only via team pass lists and for a limited number of UNF students. Fans must wear masks while in attendance with the exception of eating or drinking. Please check our COVID Protocols page for any updates.
 

WHAT TO KNOW

  • The Ospreys (4-5) are coming off a 3-0 sweep over Georgia Southern last weekend. North Florida grabbed an extra-inning win, 5-4, before defeating the Eagles 6-5 and 3-2 Saturday.
  • In the circle, Halle Arends tallied 10 strikeouts on the week while posting a 0.57 ERA. She improved to 3-1 on the year with a save.
  • Junior Ashley Goebel had six total hits and scored five runs to improve her average to .350 in the early part of the season.
  • Kayla McGory brought in six total runs in the three-game series including the walk off RBI in a 5-4 game in nine innings Friday. McGory and Shannon Glover led the team in doubles.
  • Brittany Sundermeier stepped into the starting line up and is now hitting .429 in seven at bats with three RBI thanks to a pair of sac flies against Georgia Southern.
 

OPPONENT NOTES

  • UCF (9-2) is coming off a three-game sweep over McNeese State, dominating 11-3 Saturday. The Knights set a season-high seven runs in the first inning and started the game with five straight hits. Jazmine Esparza leads UCF offensively with a .536 average and also has 15 hits, five doubles, two home runs, and 13 RBI. Georgia Blair holds a .484 batting average with 15 hits, six home runs and 15 RBI. Pitcher Alea White is the Knights ace with 1.12 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 31.1 innings.
    • UCF leads the series 13-5; The Ospreys fell to the Knights 6-2, May 1, 2019
  • Florida A&M struggled in its first tournament of the season, going 0-4 in Florida State's Unconquered Invitational. Melkayla Irvis leads the Rattlers with a .500 average, four hits and a triple. The Rattlers have had eight of their early season games canceled. 
    • UNF leads the series 19-9; The Ospreys downed the Rattlers, 6-1, April 10, 2019
  • USC Upstate (6-1) went 3-1 in the Wings ETC Classic, dropping the final game 3-5 to ETSU. Offensively, Marisa Soterakis leads the squad with a .412 average with seven hits, a double and four RBI. In the circle, Mallie Brown tossed 24.0 innings with a 1.17 ERA and 37 strikeouts. 
    • USC Upstate leads the series 26-14; The Ospreys won the last meeting, 3-2, April 4, 2018 as USC Upstate ended its tenure in the ASUN. 
  • Buffalo (0-8) went 0-4 at a tournament in Louisiana. At the plate, Alicia Peters leads the Bulls with a .300 average and six hits. Pitcher Ally Marcano holds a 7.56 ERA in 16.2 innings with 15 strikeouts. 
    • UNF leads the series 4-0; The Ospreys downed the Bulls 7-1, March 15, 2019
  • Georgia State (6-5) is coming off a 4-6 loss to Miami (Ohio) Saturday. Emily Brown leads with a .378 batting average and 14 hits. In the circle, Emily Buck holds a 2.26 ERA in 21.2 innings, with 15 strikeouts.

North Florida turns its attention to ASUN play as it hosts Jacksonville Saturday, March 13 and Sunday, March 14. Games are set for 1 p.m.
