Five Things: Softball Hosts Winthrop, SEC Foes

JACKSONVILLE - North Florida softball has a busy week ahead with five games. The Ospreys host Winthrop Tuesday before traveling to USF Thursday for a double header. UNF then welcomes a pair of SEC foes in South Carolina and Auburn to the UNF Softball Complex Saturday.

Home softball games are closed to the public. Admission is only via team pass lists and for a limited number of UNF students. Fans must wear masks while in attendance with the exception of eating or drinking. Please check our COVID Protocols page for any updates.


WHAT TO KNOW

  • The Ospreys got their first win in the final game of the River City Leadoff with a 3-1 victory against Boston College. UNF is now 1-3 in the early part of the year.
  • Sophomore Shannon Glover picked up where she left off as a freshman as she recorded a team-best four hits including two doubles on the weekend.
  • Junior Rebecca Koskey recorded the first home run of the season.
  • In the circle, Halle Arends recorded her first win in an Osprey uniform with a complete game against BC. 
  • Head coach Marcie Higgs is now in her 13th season with an overall record of 409-501. Higgs recorded her 400th career win in a 10-2 victory against Alabama A&M last season and now owns a 317-299 mark at UNF.


OPPONENT NOTES

  • Winthrop opened the season with a 2-3 record at FAU's Invitational. Ansley Gilreath led the team with a .615 average, which included eight hits - four of which were home runs. In the circle, Madyson Watson tossed 17.0 innings with a 5.29 ERA and 16 strikeouts.
    • UNF owns a 2-0 series edge against the Eagles; the last meeting was in 2016 in Clearwater.
  • USF went 0-2 against No. 6 Florida to open the season. 
    • USF leads the series history, 3-0 with the Bulls grabbing an 8-0 win in Tampa on March 18, 2018.
  • Auburn returns 18 letterwinners from the 2020 season, including eight starters, while also adding eight true freshmen. The Tigers opened the season with a sweep of Southeast Missouri State, outscoring them 16-2 across the three-game series. McKenna Dowell led the way with a 5-for-8 outing including two RBI. Aspyn Godwin tallied five RBI and three runs scored.

  • South Carolina comes into the 2021 season looking to build off a 17-6 shorted season highlighted with wins over Ohio State, Iowa State, No. 8 Michigan and No. 12 Georgia. Its first weekend of games were canceled due to weather. As a team, Carolina brings back 85 percent of its 2020 runs scored, 86 percent of its hits, 83 percent of its doubles, 85 percent of its home runs and 87 percent of its RBI.
    • South Carolina leads the series, 7-1. The teams last met in a doubleheader in 2015.
