JACKSONVILLE - North Florida softball opens its season with a slate of home games against Illinois State, Clemson and Boston College beginning on Thursday.
Softball games are closed to the public. Admission is only via team pass lists and for a limited number of UNF students. Fans must wear masks while in attendance with the exception of eating or drinking. Please check our COVID Protocols page for any updates.
WHAT TO KNOW
- Junior Rebecca Koskey was tabbed to the Preseason All-ASUN utility player. The Orange Park, Fla., native hit .451 to rank 41st in the NCAA and was 48th with a .533 on-base percentage. Koskey also ranked in the top 75 with her .784 slugging percentage. She started all 17 games, mainly playing first base. She led the team in home runs (4), while tallying 23 total hits with nine walks and 16 RBI.
- North Florida finished the season on a six-game win streak and posted a 12-6 record before the season was ended.
- Glover had back-to-back walk off hits for wins. She sent the perfect single to right field to help UNF defeat Purdue and then came back the next day to lay down a squeeze bunt and allow the Ospreys to defeat Stony Brook, 1-0.
- Sophomore hurler Morgan Clausen tossed the program's first Division I perfect game in nine innings against Stony Brook. It was the first in the ASUN since 2002.
- North Florida head coach Marcie Higgs enters her 13th season with an overall record of 409-501. Higgs recorded her 400th career win in a 10-2 victory against Alabama A&M last season and now owns a 316-296 mark at UNF.
OPPONENT NOTES
- Illinois State returns Mack Leonard who led the team with .443 average and a team-high 21 RBI, while also posting a 3-2 record in the circle with 24 strikeouts. Morgan Day is the main hurler, fanning 123 batters in 16 appearances last season. The Redbirds finished the season 12-11.
- ISU leads the series 2-0 with the last meeting being at FAU, 2-1 in eight innings
- Clemson returns for its second season after going 19-8 last year. Hanna Goodwin led the team with a .385 average, while Valerie Cagle led the team in runs scores, hits and RBI. Marissa Guimbarda hit a team-best 11 home runs. All three were named to the preseason All-ACC team. In the circle, Cagle posted a 2.19 ERA with 87 strikeouts.
- Boston went 9-12 last year before the season was called off. Ellie Mataya led the Eagles, batting .294 with 20 hits. AJ Alatorre returns after a team-high 13 RBI and batting .282.
