Talon Talk Ep. 38: "The Show Must Go On" -- Grady Trimble
6/18/2020 1:46:00 PM | General, Men's Soccer
In episode 38 of Talon Talk we speak with former UNF men's soccer student-athlete and now Fox Business Correspondent, Grady Trimble.
Trimble graduated from UNF in 2014 with his bachelor's degree in communication. Since making his on-air debut at 19 he hasn't turned back, taking reporting from Maine to Tampa and up to Chicago where he currently works.
In this episode we speak on his career, time at UNF and how he has managed working on the frontlines over the past few months as we look at another UNF alumni success.
Â
Growing up in Clearwater, Fla., Grady Trimble remembers always having network news echoing through the walls of his home.Â
At a young age Trimble began to envision not just being the one consuming the news but being in front of the camera.
"When I started to really consider what jobs I would want to do and what jobs I would be good at, I thought, 'oh, I could do that", Trimble said. "Ever since then, as a naive middle schooler to high school where you start to understand what it entails, to college where you understand what it really entails, I never deviated."
Trimble began his collegiate career at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. But, an unexpected calling had him return to Florida.
"After my first soccer season I went back and played with my [club] team again and essentially got re-recruited the same way as I did the first time around," Trimble said.Â
This is when UNF men's soccer coach Derek Marinatos and staff brought Trimble on board in advance of his sophomore season.
The 6-1 defender was a two-year letterwinner in the Navy and Gray.
"Once I started college I never thought of transferring," Trimble said. "But, I'm glad I did because I wanted to be back in Florida. Something I never thought I'd say."
Trimble shouldered a class load, two internships and soccer workouts en route to graduating in three years, two of which were spent at UNF. Trimble got his first exposure to the journalistic world as an intern with First Coast News in Jacksonville before going all the way up the east coast to Maine.
An unexpected move to some, Trimble had planned it out, deliberately choosing a station in Bangor, Maine after studying the paths of other journalists that had gone through that station.
After another move in-state to Portland, Maine and down to Tampa, Fla., with WTSP-TV, Trimble answered the call to make the move to a network opportunity in Chicago.
"I'm pleased that it happened so quickly, but it was the goal all along as well," Trimble said.
As a correspondent with Fox Business out of Chicago, Trimble focuses on the auto and agriculture industries while covering a number of breaking news stories.
His coverage would change dramatically this past March as he was in his home state to cover the impending impact of COVID-19 on Major League Baseball Spring Training games.
"The biggest thing was not being able to interact with people. We do a lot of stories inside businesses, but a lot of businesses were shut down," Trimble said.Â
On-site at Chicago O'Hare International Airport June 17 while covering a story on mask requirements while flying, the work certainly doesn't stop. When asked what he's learned about his career and life during this time, he answered fittingly, "It's not so much something I've learned, but something that is reiterated - it's that the show must go on."
