WILMINGTON, N.C. - A quartet from the UNF men's tennis squad competed in its fall season opener Friday from Porter's Neck CC at the Seahawk Fall Invite hosted by UNC Wilmington. 

Three Ospreys picked up singles wins while a pair notched a doubles triumph in the weekend opener. 

Dominik Barton and Nilo Duarte cruised past VCU's dobules pair in the Flight B bracket, 6-3. Federico Nani and Jorge Nunez were ousted by a tough duo from the University of Florida.

UNF showed grit in singles, grinding out three three-set victories. Barton downed VCU's Rayane Stable in three sets, winning the last by tiebreaker, 7-6 (10) in the Flight A bracket. 

Nunez roared back after dropping the first set to VCU's Daniel Khin, winning 6-3, 6-2 in the final two sets. Duarte got the opening set from Gonzalo Achondo of Georgia Gwinnett, but Achondo took the last two, 6-0, 6-4. 

Nani pulled out a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 triumph against Daiki Tanabei in the Flight C bracket.
 
Coach Lucas' Comments
"Well, today was exactly what I was expecting. We did some really good things, but we also played some sloppy tennis at times," head coach Matt Lucas said. "It's the first tournament of the season, so I wasn't surprised with the inconsistency with our level [of play]. Three of the guys were able to gut out some wins, which is good, and Nilo fell just short. We have to be better tomorrow with maintaining and sustaining our level throughout the matches. I am confident that we will. We have another opportunity tomorrow and the guys have to reset and try and win the day."

• Matches that were in progress with begin at 10:30 a.m.
• Main draw matches will prioritized due to Friday's weather, with the intent of getting through two rounds of main draws and one round of backdraws.
