Ospreys extend undefeated streak to open season
UNF-CSU Boxscore
CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The season-opening undefeated streak extended to four matches for the North Florida women's soccer team following Sunday's 3-0 shutout of Charleston Southern on the road.
RECORDS
North Florida | 3-0-1
Charleston Southern | 2-2-0
GOALS
UNF - 9' | Thais Reiss (Assist: Sophia Thompson)
UNF - 55' | Leah Ferlin (Assist: Hollyn Knight)
UNF - 82' | Vanessa Piermont (Assist: Kendra Hoffman)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In a change of pace, North Florida got out of the gates quickly using a goal in the 9th minute from leading scorer Thais Reiss to hand the homestanding Buccaneers a wake-up call in early starting 10 a.m. match | Sophia Thompson slipped a pass through a pair of CSU defenders finding Reiss at the top of the box, where she made a quick turn and laced a low liner into the side of the netÂ
- The UNF tally was the lone goal in the opening 45 minutes, but the Ospreys held a 7-2 edge in shot attempts
- Newcomer Leah Ferlin helped the Ospreys double their advantage in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, volleying a shot into the back of the net from in front of the goal following an arching long distance service from Hollyn Knight in the 55th minute
- Vanessa Piermont provided UNF with a final insurance goal and capped the scoring in the 82nd minute | Kendra Hoffman lofted a perfect corner kick service into the middle of the box finding Piermont for the scoring header
- The Ospreys finished the match with a 20-4 shot margin including a 10-2 edge in SOG
- Goalkeepers Rhiannon Conelley (83 minutes) and Kelli Crowley (7 minutes) combined for the squad's second shutout of the season | CSU netminder Jenna Moran finished with seven saves
QUICK KICKS
- Reiss now has 16 career goals, ranking 5th all-time in UNF's Division I era
- Her five goals this season is just one shy of her total a year ago and is halfway to the program's D1 single season markÂ
- Piermont found the back of the net for the second straight match and second time in her career
- Transfer Leah Ferlin, a native of Jacksonville, collected her first career UNF score | It was her 8th career collegiate goal after scoring seven at USF
- North Florida's undefeated start (3-0-1) thru four matches is the best start in the program's Division I history, and second best all-time behind a 13-0-0 open in 2000
- Head coach Eric Faulconer has matched the best debut season mark for an Osprey mentor (Mike Munch was 3-0-1 in 1998)
- Match victory evened UNF's all-time record vs CSU to 2-2-0 with wins in back-to-back meetings
- Win was the 95th for the Ospreys in their Division I history
- North Florida has now outscored its opponent's 9-2 this season | Averaging 15.3 shots per game
FAULCONERÂ TALK
"I thought we put in a dominant performance today from start to finish. We have started slowly the last two times out and it is something we talked a lot about. We challenged our players to come out from the opening whistle and they responded. To be on the road and start the season 3-0-1 is a credit to our players. We know the road gets harder from here, but we are showing positive growth as a team. We will be ready to embrace the challenges ahead." - Head coach Eric Faulconer
UP NEXT
North Florida wraps up its six-match road stretch to kick off the 2019 season with a pair of in-state tilts at FIU (Sept. 6) and FAU (Sept. 8) | Ospreys will make their long awaited home debut Sept. 15 against Air Force at 1 p.m.
