JACKSONVILLE - North Florida men's soccer opens its home slate on Friday as it welcomes USC Upstate as part of the Mike Gibbs Memorial Tournament.
1. PRESEASON PREDICTIONS - The Ospreys are predicted to finish third in the ASUN conference through a vote of head coaches. 2018 All-ASUN selections
Nick Burgess and
Bryson Smith along with All-Freshman honoree
Nick Lodovico highlight the returners. Burgess was also named the Fan-Vote Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
2. TAKING A LOOK AT WHO'S BACK- In his ninth season as head coach,
Derek Marinatos returns 17 players including eight starters while adding 10 newcomers including a mix of transfers and freshmen to make up the 2019 team.
3. FIND THE NET - North Florida returns 11 of its 20 goals scored last season led by
Collin Scott's three. Smith also added a team-high three helpers last season to go along with one goal of his own.
LJ Estes tallied two, while Burgess,
Jake Hawker,
Zane Bubb, Lodovico and Everett each found the back of the net.
4. BETWEEN THE PIPES -
Padraic Gilley returns after a season-ending injury last year. He started the first three games before being sidelined. Gilley helped win two stat championships with his club team prior to UNF. He will get help from freshman
Garrett Anderson and sophomore transfer
Carlos Melendez.
5. SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
-USC Upstate went overall 3-12-1 during the 2018 season and return a group of seniors including Joel Bunting, Ricky Maldonado and Solomon Constant who combined to score six goals a season ago. The Spartans also welcome 19 new faces to the program. The Spartans are predicted to finish eighth in the Big South poll.
