Ospreys Host Holy Cross, Georgetown

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - After more than a week off due to a postponed game at Bethune-Cookman, North Florida softball jumps back into action with a pair of games against Holy Cross and Georgetown on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Both games are set for 5 p.m.

Against Holy Cross
  • This will be the first meeting between the two teams.
  • North Florida is 3-1 all-time against the Patriot League teams including a 2-0 mark against Colgate this year. UNF faces off with Army in Clearwater later this season.

Against Georgetown
  • North Florida defeated the Hoyas in the first-ever meeting between the two schools at the Madeira Beach Invitational. The Ospreys won in five innings, 10-1.
  • Five players recorded two hits each on the way to 12 total smacks. Senior Tiffany Lower led the way with three RBI on the day thanks to her first home run of the season.

Home is Where the Wins Are
  • The Ospreys are 57-36 in the last five years at their home field. 
  • In coach Marcie Higgs 11 years, North Florida owns a 132-93 mark in Jacksonville and have only posted three sub-.500 records at home.
  • North Florida is currently 4-1 at home this season.

Clutch Cocuzza
  • Senior Dominica Cucuzza leads the ASUN with a .553 average, while also topping the league with 15 RBI. She picked up six this weekend at the Madeira Beach Invite where she hit .533 for the weekend.
  • She has now had a hit in all but three games and has eight multi-hit contests. She is currently riding a 11-game on-base streak.
  • Cocuzza had her first-ever grand slam against South Dakota State on February 15.

Tops the Lineup
  • Senior Navia Penrod and junior Taylor Engman have been hitting in the 1-2 spots of the line up and each own a three-game hitting streak.
  • Penrod is hitting .300 for the year with 12 hits, while Engman, who has worked her way into the lineup is batting .333 and had four hits - all coming at the Madeira Beach Invite. 
  • The duo has crossed the plate 17 combined times.

Crafty Clausen
  • Freshman hurler Morgan Clausen currently tops the staff with a 2.76 ERA in eight appearances, across 25.1 innings.
  • She owns a 2-1 mark with nine strikeouts.

Scouting the Crusaders
  • Holy Cross (1-4) is back in action for the first time since February 17. The Crusaders opened their season at the Madeira Beach Invitational a week before UNF visited the same diamond.
  • Freshman hurler Kelly Nelson tossed a complete game shutout against Drexel in her collegiate debut. She fanned 14 batters - the most by any Holy Cross player since 2005. She allowed just two hits and two walks across seven innings. 
  • At the dish, Taylor Wahler owns a team-best .412 average with seven hits. Three other players join Wahler with averages above .330.

Scouting Georgetown
  • Georgetown (5-12) is coming off a 2-1 weekend at its District Classic. Three contests were cancelled due to weather. 
  • Savannah Jones and Noelle Holiday have matching averages of .383 and 18 hits each. Holiday bests the team with 15 RBI to her line.
  • Mae Forshey leads the team with 21 smacks including a team-best seven doubles.
  • In the circle, Katie Vannicola has been the main starter with a 2-4 record in 12 appearances. She has 19 strikeouts on the season. 
  • Anna Brooks Pacha has a team-best 5.40 ERA with 20 strikeouts along with London Diller. Diller has three wins for the Hoyas.


Looking Ahead
North Florida continues action at home as it hosts the Osprey Classic beginning on Friday. UNF plays UNCW and Ball State on Friday, at 4:30 and 7 p.m., respectively, while playing a 7 p.m. game against Charleston Southern on Saturday. The Ospreys wrap the weekend with Presbyterian at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
