Softball Travels to No. 4 Florida State on Wednesday


JACKSONVILLE - Looking to extend its nine-game win streak, North Florida softball has a tough hurdle ahead as it travels to No. 3 Florida State on Wednesday at JoAnne Graf Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m.

North Florida Ospreys
  • North Florida moved to 16-8 on the season with its nine straight wins including three shutouts during the stretch.
  • The Ospreys are hitting .295 as a team to rank 65th in the nation.
  • Dominica Cocuzza is fifth in the country with her .514 average and 40th in slugging percentage (.833).
  • In the circle, Sydney Matzko leads the team with her 8-4 record and 2.26 ERA. Morgan Blourne is just behind with a 6-2 mark and 2.30 ERA. 
  • Matzko has picked up two saves so far this season, while Blourne and Morgan Clausen each own one.
  • In addition to Cocuzza, four other Ospreys are hitting above .400.

  • After recording seven hits last week, senior Navia Penrod is just four swings short of holding the UNF career record. She is behind Kelly Lee (1998-2001) who owns 246 hits.
  • Classmate Dominica Cocuzza is chasing a few records of her own including doubles and RBI. She needs nine doubles to tie the school record also held by Lee. Currently sitting at 114 RBI, Cocuzza is 29 behind Gwen Williams (2005-08) who has 143 for her career. Cocuzza currently has 25 on the season.

Florida State (27-3)
  • Florida State is the reigning NCAA National Champions after beating Washington in back-to-back games in the 2018 Women's College World Series.
  • The Seminoles hold a 12-game winning streak against UNF and have an overall record of 15-1 against the Ospreys. The last time North Florida came to Tallahassee, the Seminoles posted 8-0 and 3-0 wins in a doubleheader on March 8, 2017.
  • FSU ranks in the top five of the NCAA in six different team categories, including ranking second in batting average (.365), slugging percentage (.637) and on base percentage (.455).
  • Meghan King continues to anchor the Seminole pitching staff with a 1.35 ERA and a 14-1 record with 93 strikeouts on the season. Counterpart Kathryn Sandercock is 8-0 on the year, but has pitched just one complete game.
  • At the plate, Sydney Sherrill leads all batters with her .469 average, while three others are above .400. Sherrill and Cali Harrod both own 38 hits.
