TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The spring season started off with men's tennis splitting on day one of the FSU Invite. The Ospreys (1-1) cruised by Louisiana (1-1), 4-1, before Florida Atlantic (2-0) got the better end of things in the second match of the day by the same score.

Two singles matches were left unfinished, but UNF took three of four that went to completion. Till Von Winning edged Jan Galka 7-6 (8-6) in the first set prior to taking number one match in straight sets with a 6-3 win. Classmate Sahil Deshmukh won 6-1, 6-4 and rookie Dominik Barton took care of the match at number three, 6-4, 6-1. Sophomore Nilo Duarte suffered the lone loss on the day, succumbing to Arthur Libaud, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1).

Von Winning and Duarte's top-slot match in doubles was left unfinished, but the Ospreys took the next two from the Ragin' Cajuns. Deshmukh and Jorge Nunez won 6-4 and Barton combined with Federico Nani to win, 6-2.

"It was a good win over a quality Louisiana team in the first match from our guys," head coach Matt Lucas said. "We came out and executed well in doubles to get off on the right track. I thought there were some first-match jitters early on in singles, but we found our way and took care of business."

Barton held strong in the afternoon, winning 6-1, 6-1 over Gabriel Sidney to move to 2-0 on the day in singles at the third spot. The Owls were able to create some distance by winning a pair of three-set matches in singles play and two matches by way of 6-1 in doubles. Deshmukh held the 5-4 upper hand in set three, but the match concluded as unfinished.

"We were obviously disappointed in the result of the match with FAU, but proud of the way we battled", Lucas said. "We certainly didn't do ourselves any favors with passive play in doubles. Our guys definitely battled in singles and had a real chance to take control of the match, although unfortunately we didn't manage the momentum very well and missed opportunities that were there for the taking. Hopefully tomorrow we can rectify those deficiencies against a good UAB team.

The Ospreys finish up play at the FSU Invite tomorrow against UAB. First serve is set for 12:30 p.m.
