Top-Seeded Men's Tennis Plays Kennesaw in Semifinals

JACKSONVILLE - Top-seeded North Florida men's tennis faces off with No. 5 Kennesaw State in the ASUN Semifinals on Saturday at 9 a.m.. The Owls took down No. 4 Lipscomb, 4-1, on Friday afternoon.

LAST TIME: North Florida won 5-2 during the ASUN season finale. KSU won at the No. 1 and No. 6 positions.

QUICK HITS
  • North Florida claimed its second straight ASUN Regular Season Title after going perfect in conference action. The Ospreys look to bounce back from their 2017 performance where they fell to No. 4 FGCU in the semifinals.
  • UNF won its first championship in 2016, taking down USC Upstate in the championship match. That year, second-seeded North Florida had to go through No. 4 Kennesaw State. The Ospreys shutout the Owls, 4-0 in that meeting to advance to the championship.
  • On Thursday, Lasse Muscheites was honored as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year for his performance in the classroom and on the court. He also earned All-ASUN first team accolades alongside classmate Jefta Kecic.
  • After finishing unbeaten in ASUN action, Sahil Deshmukh earned an All-ASUN second team nod.  He joined Till Von Winning and Nilo Duarte on the second singles team.
  • After guiding UNF to its second straight undefeated ASUN season, Matt Lucas was tabbed Coach of the Year.

For us its a chance to continue a great ASUN season. We know the challenges ahead, but we are eager to lay everything on the line for the NCAA berth. OPPONENT NOTES
  • Kennesaw State advanced to its first semifinal since 2016 when the Owls glided past Stetson 4-3. 
  • The win was just the Owls second-ever win in the ASUN Championships.
  • ASUN Player of the Year Fermin Calvo Barcelo boasts a 7-0 mark against conference opponents in the No. 1 position.
  • During the regular season, Calvo Barcelo and Harrison Wood won the singles matches for the Owls.

LOOKING AHEAD
With a win on Saturday, North Florida would advance to the championship match to face the winner of Stetson/FGCU on Sunday at 10 a.m.
