Men's Tennis Opens ASUN Play with FGCU on Friday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla – After battling to a 4-3 win on Wednesday evening, North Florida men's tennis gears up for one of the biggest matches of the year when it welcomes FGCU to town on Friday at 6 p.m.
 
It is also Club Night at the courts with Buy One Get One Beer for fans 21 and older.
 
QUICK HITS
  • North Florida faces off with the Eagles after dropping a 4-3 decision in the ASUN Semifinals last season. UNF came in at the No. 1 spot and faced FGCU, the No. 4 seed and host, at 11:58 p.m.
  • UNF is coming off of a tight win against CofC on Wednesday with Sahil Deshmukh looking to extend his singles win streak to four matches. He is currently 4-2 in the No. 3 spot.
  • Senior Jefta Kecic clinched the match for UNF against the Cougars to pick up his second victory in the No. 1 position, while Tin Von Winning moves to 4-2 in the No. 4 slot.

THE SERIES:  UNF leads 8-5
LAST TIME: The Ospreys dropped a tight 4-3 result in the ASUN semifinals last time against the Eagles. UNF did pick up a dominant 6-1 win against FGCU during the regular season last year.
  • The Eagles became just the second team to take a doubles point from the Ospreys last season. 
  • FGCU went up in singles before the Ospreys knotted the score with two singles wins. 
  • After a back-and-forth match at the No. 5 spot, it was in the final match at the sixth position who took the win and sent UNF home.
  • During the regular season, North Florida had no trouble taking down the Eagles with a 6-1 win on their home court.
  • Four Eagles competed in the ASUN semifinals a year ago.

FGCU
  • The Eagles are coming off of a 4-2 win against UTA on Friday, Feb. 23 and are winners of three of their last four matches.
  • Felipe Escobar leads FGCU with a 5-2 record playing out of the No. 3 and 5 spots. Felipe Ramirez, in the No. 1 spot, is at 4-4.
  • Escobar paired with Austin Bates is 3-1 in doubles action playing in the top two positions.
  • Ramirez was named to the first team all-conference and freshman of the year in the ASUN a season ago.

LOOKING AHEAD
North Florida continues its home stand on Tuesday night when the Ospreys face ETSU at the UNF Tennis Complex. First serve against the Buccaneers is set for 6 p.m. The Ospreys picked up a 4-2 win against ETSU on the road last season.
