Ospreys Suffer 2-1 Setback vs. Lipscomb

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – North Florida's quest for a 2-0 start in conference play fell short on Saturday night as the Ospreys suffered a 2-1 setback vs. Lipscomb at Hodges Stadium.

UNF is now 2-8 on the season with a 1-1 mark in ASUN play while the Bisons improve to 3-7 (2-1 ASUN).

Goals
UNF: 36' – LJ Estes (Assisted by Nick Burgess)
LIPSCOMB: 43' – John Wynia (Assisted by Jake Zec)
LIPSCOMB: 72' – Zarek Jakubowski (Assisted by Noah Gulden)

How It Happened
  • North Florida threatened early when Bryson Smith received the ball at midfield and took the ball down the left side before being broken up in the box by the Lipscomb goalkeeper.
  • The Osprey attack had another near miss when Mikey Connell played the ball into the center of the box, just missing a crashing Nick Lodovico down the middle that would have given UNF a 1-0 lead.
  • A leaping Philip D'Amico broke up Lipscomb's first attempt at taking the lead in the 22nd minute.
  • UNF scored its lone goal in the 36th minute when Nick Burgess launched a throw in from the right side. LJ Estes received the ball on the right side of the goal and flicked a header into the top left corner of the net, scoring his first career goal.
  • The Bisons tied the match just before intermission in the 43rd minute.
  • Lipscomb took the lead in the 72nd minute when Noah Gulden crossed the ball into the middle and it ricocheted off Zarek Jakubowski into the back of the net.
  • The Ospreys nearly tied the match at two when Jake Hawker connected with Chase Bobbitt at the goal line, but Bobbitt's attempt was blocked and went soaring over the crossbar.

Thoughts From the Top
"I thought we were pretty well prepared tonight. Our chance at getting the win at home eluded us, we were building momentum and it was set up for us to get three points and be at the top of the table. We had the first goal and executed the game plan after coming out with great energy. I think in the second half, we didn't control the ball enough and the defending and being pinned in really hurt us. We waited too long to get them pinned in and to start competing for another goal. We had an opportunity for a second goal at the goal line that was cleared last second which would have been a great story for Chase Bobbitt. Overall, I am pleased and think Philip D'Amico was great and kept us in the game by making some great saves. It was a good battle and a well-deserved victory for Lipscomb for them to get that second goal." – head coach Derek Marinatos

Quick Kicks
  • Both teams notched seven shots in the second half while Lipscomb edged the Ospreys in the match, 11-10.
  • Tonight's goal was the first of his career for LJ Estes.
  • Philip D'Amico garnered six saves in the net for UNF.
  • Mikey Connell and Nick Lodovico attempted a team-high two shots apiece while six Ospreys tallied one shot.
