
Men's Soccer Opens 2017 Campaign in Mike Gibbs Tournament

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida men's soccer team looks to defend its back-to-back ASUN regular season titles beginning with the 6th Annual Mike Gibbs Tournament this weekend. The Ospreys will co-host the tournament with Jacksonville and welcome Campbell and UNC Wilmington to Hodges Stadium.
UNF opens the 2017 season against Campbell at 7 p.m. before concluding that tournament against UNCW on Sunday at 7 p.m.

North Florida Men's Soccer Preview
Defending the Throne: Capturing back-to-back ASUN regular season crowns, the Ospreys look to return to the NCAA Tournament after falling just short in the ASUN Tournament a season ago. UNF has posted a 9-0-2 undefeated conference regular season during the two year span. The Ospreys were picked to finish second in the 2016 ASUN Preseason Coaches Poll behind ASUN Tournament Champions, FGCU.
Returning Offense: The Ospreys welcome back six of their top eight scorers from a season ago, including 2016 ASUNÂ Freshman of the Year, Adrian Nunez. The Sophomore led the team in goals (7), points (18) and tied the team lead in assists (4). First-Team All-Conference selection, Joshua Castellanos, looks to build off his three goal and an assist production from last season, while Second-Team All-Conference honoree, Micah Smoak, looks to return to his four goal form for his senior season.
Strong Between the Pipes: UNF's Juanes Fajardo was selected as the ASUN Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year in a poll that was voted on by the conference coaches. Fajardo, a second team All-Conference selection in 2016, led the league with a 0.61 goals against average and posted a .909 save percentage versus conference opponents.Â
Challenging Slate: The Ospreys play four teams that reached the NCAA Tournament and play three of those teams on the road. UNF also plays three teams ranked in the preseason top 25 poll in Clemson (No. 5), conference foe FGCU (No.23) and Connecticut (No. 24).
Scouting the Competition
Campbell:  The Camels finished last season with a 5-11-0 record which placed them eighth in the Big South. Campbell graduated just three seniors from a season ago and look to build off gained experience for the younger players. Defenders Edward Fulwood and Daniel Mukuna return for another season after both were name Second-Team All-Big South selections last year. Head coach Dustin Fonder is in his third season at the helm for the Camels.
UNCW: The Seahawks were picked to finish third in the 2017 Colonial Athletic Association Coaches Poll. Julio Moncada earned a spot on the CAA All-Conference team after leading the team with eight goals and three assists a season ago. Joel Bylander and Mark Lindstrom received honorable mention notice. The Seahawks return 19 letterwinners from last year's squad, including nine starters.
About the Mike Gibbs Memorial Tournament:Â Established in 2012, the Mike Gibbs Memorial Tournament is named after former UNF men's soccer player, Mike Gibbs. The Orange Park, Fla. native was a member of the Ospreys from 1993-1995 and passed away in 2003. An endowed scholarship in his name benefits current North Florida student-athletes. The four-team tournament is hosted on the campus' of both UNF and Jacksonville, and includes Campbell and UNCW in 2016. A champion and All-Tournament Team are announced at the conclusion of all four games.
