Bethune-Cookman Tops Ospreys in Midweek Rematch

The Short Story: The North Florida baseball team ran into a hot-hitting Bethune-Cookman squad Wednesday night at Harmon Stadium, as the Wildcats earned a season split against the Ospreys with a 10-2 victory. BCU broke things open in the fourth inning when they plated five runs.

LEADING OFF 
- The Wildcats took control of the game early, scoring runs in each of the first four frames including a 5-run outburst in the fourth
- The loss marked a split in the home-and-home series with Bethune with the visiting squad getting the "W" both times. Even with the defeat, UNF has taked 6 of the last 8 meetings with BCU.
- As a team , UNF only mustered six hits on the night with junior Mac Wilson collecting three of them for his first career mulit-hit game... Coming into tonight's game Wilson had three hits all season in 14 games
- Wesley Weeks and Patrick Ervin both tallied RBI in the game with sacrifice flies
- After surrendering 10 runs through four innings, the Ospreys shut down the Wildcats over the final five frames with Tyler Dupont and Trace Norkus working the final four innings of relief allowing just two hits and striking out four
- BCU starter Tyler Krull threw 103 pitches and limited the Osprey bats to just four hits and one earned run while striking out eight in 6.0 innings of work
- Wildcat catcher Jordan Stacy, a native of Jacksonville, finished 3-for-4 in the game with 5 RBI 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
- Bethune-Cookman got on the board quickly with a run in the top of the first. A leadoff walk and stolen base but a runner in scoring position and after a groundout moved him to third, he crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly.
- The Wildcats upped their lead to 3-0 with two more runs in the second. The first batter singled and then came home when Jordan Stacy sent a ball deep over the leftfield fence for a two run homer
- North Florida, who has scored more runs in the 2nd inning this season than in any other frame, got one run back when Alex Merritt reached first on a hit by pitch and stole second. Christian Diaz singled him to third allowing Patrick Ervin to score him with a deep fly out.
- BCU answered with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third. The leadoff batter reached on a throwing error by Merritt, but after a pair of flyouts, Bethune used a walk sandwiched between a pair of singles including a 2-RBI hit from Stacy to widen their lead to 5-1.
- In the fourth, Bethune batted around en route to doubling their run total in the game. The Wildcats tallied four hits and benefited from a wild pitch and a field error in the outfield to seize the momentum.
- UNF scored the final run of the contest in the home half of the 7th. Mac Wilson slapped his third hit of the game to open the frame and moved up to second when Rey Gonzalez followed with a single. Yahir Gurrola hit a fly ball deep to right field allowing Wilson to reach third and then Wesley Weeks hit another fly ball to right that sent Wilson home ahead of the throw.
- Osprey relievers retired seven consecutive batters in one stretch and only allowed four base runners over the final five innings

WHAT'S NEXT
The Ospreys host the Wildcats for the second part of the home-and-home set on Wednesday (Mar. 29) in Harmon Stadium at 5 p.m.
