Ospreys Take Series Over Dallas Baptist with 6-2 Win in Finale

THE SHORT STORY
North Florida earned a signature series win with a 6-2 victory over perennial baseball power Dallas Baptist at a sun drenched Harmon Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Not only did the Ospreys remain undefeated in weekend series this season with the win but they also received a much needed pitching performance from Brad Depperman.

Depperman was stellar in earning his first victory of the season, giving up just two runs in 6.2 innings of work. He limited a potent DBU offense to only four hits, and was even more stingy with his control by allowing a lone walk while striking out a career-high matching seven.

Just as they did in Friday night's series opener, Anthony Delaney and Matthew Naylor came on in relief to preserve the Osprey's 17th victory of the season.

At the plate, UNF saw each of its first six batters in the lineup collect a hit as the team finished with 10 knocks for the day. Christian Diaz paced the Ospreys with three hits while Chris Thibideau and Alex Merritt both chipped in two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- All the runs scored in the series finale came in the game's first three innings as pitching and solid defense from both sides prevailed over the game's final six innings.
- The Ospreys tallied all the runs they would need in this contest, scoring five runs in the second inning, with all of them coming after two Ospreys were out. After Chris Berry led off the inning with a solid single to right field, Patriot starter Jordan Martinson needed only one more out after retiring the next two UNF hitters.  However, Rey Gonzalez kept the inning alive by drawing a walk after fouling off a number of Martinson's pitches. Patrick Ervin was hit by a pitch to extend the inning and load the bases for Yahir Gurrola. The junior from El Paso, Texas, put a hurt on his home state team by lashing a solid single to left driving in a pair of Ospreys for the first runs of the day. The hit extended the hot-hitting Gurrola's streak to 10 and padded his team leading RBI total to 25 and set the stage for Wesley Weeks. Weeks was moved into the number two spot in the batting order and the decision paid off handsomely for Coach Smoke Laval, when Weeks belted his second homer run in the series to give UNF a 5-0 advantage.
- Depperman had his only glitch in the contest when he served up a home run ball off the bat of DPU's Tim Millard in the top of the third inning that trimmed the Osprey lead to 5-2.  However, it could have been worse for the Ospreys, but Alex Merritt speared a line drive off the bat of the Patriot's Jameson Hannah to turn a sure fire double into an out.
- The Osprey's got one of those runs back in their half of the inning. The run would surprisingly prove to be the final one scored in the game. Merritt led off the inning with a high chopper to third. By the time the ball finally settled into the glove of DBU third baseman's Matt Duce, Merritt had easily crossed first base with a single. Berry executed a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt to move Merritt into scoring position at second base where he would race home for the Osprey's sixth run of the game thanks to a base hit up the middle from Christian Diaz.
- Although no further scoring occurred, there were some anxious moments for the Osprey faithful in the Dallas Baptist half of the seventh inning.  After Depperman fanned the innings lead off hitter, Evan Sandmann recorded the first hit given up by the Osprey starting hurler since Millard's home run in the third frame. The Patriots Camden Duzeneck reached base after getting nicked by a Depperman pitch but the final batter Depperman would face was retired on a fly ball to Weeks in left field for the second out.  Eddie Miller came on in relief of Depperman to face the left handed hitting Hannah, but he was able to work a walk to load the bases, Laval called upon Anthony Delaney to put out the possible fire and the move worked perfectly as Delaney induced Millard to fly out to UNF center fielder Chris Thibideau and leave the runners stranded.
- Delaney and closer Matt Naylor then shut out the Patriot hitters over the final two frames to secure the win and keep the Osprey streak of not having a losing weekend series for the 2017 season.

ODDS AND ENDS
- Smoke Laval shuffled his batting order for Sunday's battle with DBU and the moves worked perfectly in the UNF win.   In addition to Week's moving up to the two spot, which resulted in the junior from Clay Co. belting a pivotal three run home run, Laval rewarded Diaz's four hit game in Saturday's defeat by moving the Osprey's DH up to the seven hole. Diaz came through with a three hit performance to record seven hits in the series final two games to improve his average nearly 70 points from .197 to a his current .266 pace.
- Chris Thibideau continued his consistent hitting with his 10th multi-hit game of the season adding a double and a single to his ledger.
- Each of Merritt's base hits were nearly identical, a pair of high Baltimore Choppers to third base.
- Although Gurrola is having a monster year offensively, his spectacular play in the game's second inning would go down in UNF lore as one of the best in Osprey history.  DBU's Luke Bandy sent a drive into foul territory that appeared to be nothing more than a harmless foul ball.  But Gurrola thought otherwise and dove headfirst into the pitching mound in the right field bullpen and making a catch, that threw all thoughts of caution to the winds.
- Except for a catcher's interference call against UNF catcher Rey Gonzalez that has to be charged as an error, both teams played error free ball in the well played rubber game finale.

WHATS NEXT
Once again the Ospreys will face a busy five game week schedule beginning with a home-and-home series versus Bethune-Cookman.  The Ospreys will travel to Daytona Beach to play BCU on Tuesday before hosting the Wildcats at Harmon Stadium, Wednesday in a 5:00 p.m. first pitch.

UNF will begin their ASUN schedule with a Friday-Sunday series against Kennesaw State. Friday's game will begin at 6:00 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday's games slated for 1:00 p.m. starts.
