Softball Opens Season at FAU Kickoff Classic

BOCA RATON, Fla. - North Florida softball gets underway as it travels to FAU to take part in the FAU Kickoff Classic.

2016 Season Notes: North Florida ranked second in the ASUN with 65 doubles, 25 of those doubles coming during league play. The Ospreys also boasted a team batting average of .274, good for third place in the ASUN. Penrod posted a conference top-ten on base percentage of .404 while Cocuzza made her mark with 14 total RBI's on 56 hits.

  • Ashia Kerr, Logan Green and Jen Valle led the team as the three seniors on the squad.
  • The Ospreys are one of the first squads to make their season debut, taking on 2016 Conference USA Champions FAU.
  • The Ospreys dive into a challenging schedule, battling eight teams that visited the NCAA Tournament in 2016.
  • In her nine-year tenure at North Florida, head coach Marcie Hickey has consistently led the Ospreys to 20-win seasons in ever year.
  • North Florida enters 2017 featuring 11 returning players. 
  • The Ospreys closed out the 2016 regular season on a high note posting a 4-3 victory against USC Upstate in their season finale.  
KEY RETURNERS
Navia Penrod: The Naples, Fla. native played at both second base and outfield in all 49 games for the Ospreys. Penrod finished as the team leader in runs (38), hits (59), and stolen bases (19). The sophomore's batting average of .355 ranked third in the ASUN.
Minnie Cocuzza: Cocuzza started in 38 games posting a .416 slugging perecntage. Her slugging percentage and batting average of .307 ranked third on the roster. She collected 31 hits in 22 contests, tallying a total of eight multi-hit games.
Logan Green:The senior started at pitcher in 26 games for North Florida. Green ranked third in the ASUN in saves while also leading the team in innings pitched (161.2), strikeouts (58) and saves (2). 

LOOKING AHEAD
After the opening weekend, North Florida comes back home to host the Osprey Invitational beginning on Friday, Feb. 17. UNF takes on Eastern Illinois at 3:45 p.m. for the home opener before playing Kansas at 8:15 p.m.
