The Short Story: The North Florida baseball team rebounded from an 7-6 extra inning loss in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader against Northeastern with an offensive explosion in their game two 17-6 victory at Harmon Stadium.
GAME 1
LEADING OFF
- The Ospreys used a three run seventh inning to take the lead before Northeastern got a run in the eighth to send the game to extra innings, where the Huskies got two in the 10th and fended off an answer by UNF to escape with the win
- North Florida collected 8 hits with Chris Berry coming off the bench to notch two of them along with three RBI... Berry had his first homer of the season while Joe Boyle belted his third roundtripper
- Northeastern tallied 12 hits led by a 3-for-4 performance by Max Burt with 3 RBI
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mason Koppens led off the game with a double for NU and would score the game's first run following a pair of infield groundouts.
- In the second inning, Koppens would drive in the Huskies second run following his second him of the game
- The Ospreys answered with their first run of the game in the bottom of the second as Boyle launched a homerun
- Max Burt got the first of his 3 RBI for Northeastern in the third after looping a single over second base that scored Cam Hanley
- UNF benefitted from a pair of wild pitches in the fourth inning to add a run. Alex Merritt scored the run after reaching base with a single and moving to second on Tanner Murphy's first hit of the season
- Northeastern found a way to manufacture another run in the fifth. With two outs, Burt collected his second RBI with a double that drove in Charlie McConnell
- McConnell would rob Chris Matthias of an extra base hit in the seventh, but Berry followed later in the frame with his 3-run blast coming after Ospreys had two outs.
- Burt continued his hot hitting for the Huskies, producing an RBI double in the eighth that erased the Osprey's one-run advantage from Berry's homer
- In the 10th, NU saw its first two batters reach base via walks in front of pinch hitter Nick Fanneron's RBI single that bounced over Alex Merritt's head at first base. David Hopkins drove in an important insurance run later in the inning when his bloop single hit the ground in front of a diving Yahir Gurrola in right field
- North Florida got one run in the bottom of the frame, but left the tying run stranded at third base
GAME 2
LEADING OFF
- North Florida scored early and late, producing 9 runs in the first two innings along with 9 more in their final two innings
- The Ospreys belted out a season best 20 hits including a near program single game record of 7 doubles
- The 17 runs marked the high mark of the season for UNF and were the most since posting 22 wins vs NJIT on May 20, 2016
- Matt Vaka started the game and pitched 4 innings followed by four innings from Anthony Delaney and a clean final inning by reliever Alex Smith
- Seven UNF hitters produced multi-hit performances in the game led by Yahir Gurrola and Chris Thibideau, who both finished with 4 hits... Thibideau had a team best 5 RBI highlighted by his second homerun of the season
- UNF's pitching staff limited a hot-hitting Huskies squad to just nine hits in the game
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Ospreys wasted little time in getting on the board in the second game of the day.
Yahir Gurrola led things off with a single and advanced two bases on a throwing error before coming home on a Thibideau single. A passed ball allowed Thibideau to score the second run of the frame, and
Tanner Murphy drove
Alex Merritt in with an RBI double down the left field line.
- Northeastern got a run back in the top of the second, when Michael Geaslen notched a two-out RBI single
- UNF played some small ball in their half of the second inning en route to plating 8 runs. After a leadoff double for
Chris Berry,
Dalton Board moved Berry to third with a sacrifice bunt. Gurrola then drove him in with an infield single.
Patrick Ervin followed with a walk in front of an RBI double from Thibideau that scored Gurrola. Merritt's ground out pushed Ervin across the plate and
Blake Voyles two-run homer capped the offensive show
- Thibideau notched his third consecutive hit and second double of the day to drive in Ervin for another Osprey run in third inning that put UNF in front, 9-1
- UNF's game one nemesis, Max Burt, struck again hitting a solo home run in the fourth
- A pair of base hits, a walk and an Osprey error netted a run and ended the day for UNF starter,
Matt Vaka.
Anthony Delaney limited the Huskies to just one more run in the frame to halt any type of comeback.
- A red-hot Thibideau sailed his second homer of the season and third extra base hit of the game over the center field fence in the seventh to widen the UNF lead. Voyles picked up another RBI in scoring Merritt for the Osprey's 12th run.
- In the eighth, NU opened with three consecutive hits, but Delaney battled and held the Huskies to just two runs
- North Florida answered in their half of the eighth, loading the bases with no outs. Gurrola laced his second double of the game to drive in a pair, followed by a two-run double for Ervin.
