No. 5 Georgia Powers Past @OspreyWTen in NCAA Tournament

ATHENS, Ga. -  No. 5 Georgia was too much for North Florida women's tennis as the Bulldogs topped the Ospreys, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon at Henry Feild Stadium at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

UNF finishes its season with a 13-7 overall mark and adds its fifth NCAA appearance in the last four years to its resume. Georgia advances to face Baylor and moves to 21-4 on the year.

"We had chances to win the doubles point. We set up the play perfectly on our deuce point to go 5-5 and we didn't execute the volley," said head coach Audra Cohen. "After that I felt like we were a little flat at the beginning of singles on most courts and by the time we got ourselves into some matches, it was too late.Overall, we accomplished our goal. Each player bought into the system and fought their fears so they could grow as people and players. I am so proud of them and proud to be an Osprey."

In doubles play, the No. 3 duo of junior Michelle Valdez and senior Mariella Calderon dropped Caroline Brinson and Laura Patterson, 6-3. The #81 Bulldog pair at No. 2 grabbed a win to leave it up to the No. 1 position. Noemi Hemmerich and Quetzali Vazquez battled the #10 doubles pair in the country, but dropped the 6-4 decision to give Georgia the doubles point.

During singles play, Hemmerich and freshman Rafaela Gomez were the lone Ospreys to win a set. Facing Ellen Perez, the No. 5 player in the country, Hemmerich grabbed the opening set, 6-2 and was leading 5-1 when the match was called. Gomez dropped her first set against No. 116 Silvia Garcia, but bounced back with a 6-2 second-set victory and led in the third when the Bulldogs clinched.

No. 28 Kennedy Shaffer and No. 30 Caroline Brinson grabbed wins at the No. 2 and No. 4 spots, before a win from Mariana Gould in the No. 5 singles for the win.

The Ospreys return the middle part of their lineup and are adding two during the off season.
