FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior
Chris Thibideau hit two home runs, including a go-ahead, solo shot in the 12
th inning to propel North Florida (27-15, 6-5 A-Sun) to a 11-10 victory over FGCU (20-22, 6-5 A-Sun). The two teams combined for 34 hits in and every player in the Osprey lineup recorded a hit.
The game was tied on five different occasions and the Ospreys held a total of five leads in the contest. Thibideau broke the game's final tie with his sixth home run of the year and second of the day in the 12
th inning. He lifted the first pitch he saw and cleared the left field wall with plenty of room to spare. The home run capped a 4-for-5 day that included three runs scored and a career-high five RBIs.
FGCU came back twice in the late innings, first erasing a three-run deficit with a game-tying single from Colton Bottomley in the sixth. Thibideau recaptured the lead for the Ospreys with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh that scored
Nick Karmeris. North Florida added an insurance run in the eighth with a two-out RBI single from
Keith Skinner to make the score, 10-8.
The Eagles mounted one final comeback in the ninth, when the first two runners reached. A sacrifice bunt by Friday night's starting pitcher, Brady Anderson set the table for lead-off man Matt Reardon who punched a single into left center field that allowed both runners to score and tied the game at 12.
Corbin Olmstead pitched the final four innings and improved to 4-0 on the year. The victory is the 12
th of his career, tying him for seventh most in the program's D-1 era. At the plate, Olmstead reached base three times, extending his streak to 35 games. He drove in his team-best 42
nd run of the season with an RBI ground out in the first.
For the fifth time in his career, shortstop
Kyle Brooks put forth a four-hit effort. He finished the day, 4-for-6 with a walk. Skinner and Karmeris each had two hits while Karmeris matched Thibideau with a team-high three runs scored.
Making his first start of his career at second base,
Zach Drury collected two hits. His two-RBI double in the third inning polished off a five-run Osprey rally. It marked the 11
th time this season the Ospreys have scored five or more runs in a single inning.
After the Eagles plated four runs in the first 1.1 innings, reliever
Tyler DuPont came in and allowed three earned runs over the next five innings. He left the game with the lead in the seventh inning.
North Florida has won all three extra inning games this season and have won four in-a-row dating back to last season. The official game time was three hours and 58 minutes, the longest game since an
8-7, 12-inning win over Kennesaw State on May 24, 2013 in the Atlantic Sun Tournament, a span of 156 games.
The Ospreys will look to capture their first series in Fort Myers in tomorrow's rubber match at noon. Lefty
Austin Drury (3-1) will get the start for the Ospreys while right-hander Mario Leon (3-3) will be on the mound for the Eagles.
