Ospreys Outlast Owls to Advance

DELAND, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team used a RBI fielder's choice to score Kyle Brooks from third base and give the Ospreys (40-17) an 8-7 victory over the Kennesaw State Owls (27-29) at the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament at Melching Field in DeLand, Fla.
 
Tied 7-7 in the bottom of the 12th, Brooks led off the inning with a walk. He moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Corey Bass. Brooks moved to within 90 feet of home on a wild pitch. Garrick Ferguson chopped a ball over the pitcher's head. The shortstop fielded the ball and threw home, but Brooks was able to slide in under the tag for the walk-off victory.
 
Offensively, the Ospreys recorded nine hits on the night, including a double and a triple. Drew Weeks led the team with a double and a team-best three RBI. Tyler Marincov added a triple, scoring a team-high three runs on the night. Donnie Dewees paced the team with two hits in the game. Brooks added a pair of RBI and the game-winning run. Ferguson recorded a hit, but reached on the game-winning RBI fielder's choice.
 
On the mound, relief pitcher David Trexler kept the Ospreys in the game. The junior entered the game in the fifth inning and finished out the game (7.1 innings). Trexler allowed just one unearned run on six hits – all singles. He was charged with five walks, but recorded a career-best eight strikeouts. Trexler entered the game in relief of starter Tommy Organ who went 4.2 innings allowing six runs on nine hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
 
Kennesaw State was the first team to score, plating three runs in the top of the first inning. The Owls started the game with a single up the middle. Following a strikeout, KSU used a single to place a second runner on base. With two on and one out, the Owls' Chris McGowan doubled to right center, scoring the lead runner. The next batter hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score the second run of the inning and advance McGowan to third base. A bunt single scored McGowan and put the designated visiting team ahead 3-0.
 
North Florida responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to cut the deficit to 3-2. With one out, Paul Karmeris walked to place a runner on base. Marincov drove home P. Karmeris with a RBI triple. Dewees followed with a RBI single to second base. The Ospreys were unable to score another run in the inning, but trimmed the margin to just one run.
 
The Ospreys tied the game in the bottom of the third inning. Marincov was hit by a pitch to start the inning. He advanced to second as Dewees walked. Ryan Roberson moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt. Weeks flew out to right field, scoring Marincov on the sacrifice fly.
 
The Owls regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning. The leadoff batter Bo Way doubled to right center field. McGowan followed with a walk. Max Pentecost put the Owls in front with one swing, homering to left field. The Ospreys escaped any further damage as a strikeout and a groundout provided the first two outs. After a single and a pitching change, the inning ended with a pop up to first base.
 
UNF took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, Marincov walked to give the Ospreys a base runner. Dewees singled up the middle to give North Florida a pair of base runners. Roberson loaded the bases with an infield single. Weeks doubled to right center field to score Marincov and Dewees. With two outs and two runners in scoring position, Brooks put the Ospreys in front with a two-RBI single to center field, scoring Roberson and Weeks and giving North Florida its first lead of the ballgame.
 
KSU knotted the game at 7-7 with an unearned run in the top of the ninth inning. McGowan led off the inning with a single to third and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Ospreys. With one out, the runner advanced to third on an infield single to short. With runners on the corners, KSU's Peyton Hart tied the game with a RBI single to center field. Trexler ended the inning with back-to-back strikeouts with the game tied at 7-7.
 
The game remained tied until the 12th inning as the Ospreys won in walk-off fashion. The game was the ninth extra-inning game of the season for UNF and the sixth victory of the season in extra-innings.
 
North Florida continues play in the 2013 A-Sun Championships with a game at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Ospreys will play the winner of No. 6 seed Lipscomb and No. 7 seed Kennesaw State. Live stats, live audio, live video and in-game tweets (@OspreyBSB) will be available throughout the game.
