@OspreyBSB Downs Eagles to Take A-Sun Road Series

Box Score (PDF)
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Starting pitcher Austin Drury allowed just one run over 7.1 innings in a 6-3, series-clinching win over FGCU (20-23, 6-6 A-Sun). North Florida improves to 28-15 overall and 7-5 in Atlantic Sun play.

Drury matched a season-high 7.1 innings pitched and notched his fourth win of the season. He struck out five batters and scattered four hits in a 108-pitch effort. The freshman lefthander got better as the game went along and retired eight in-a-row from the fifth to eighth innings including two strikeouts in the seventh inning. He has allowed just one run or less in three of his four A-Sun starts this season.

The Ospreys never trailed in the contest and have now won eight of the last nine games. The series victory over FGCU was the first ever for North Florida after eight previous tries. The Ospreys have taken four of the last five games against FGCU.

The North Florida offense got to work early and scored two runs in the first inning. Keith Skinner got the Ospreys on the board with a RBI ground out that scored Dakota Higdon. He was followed up by Nick Karmeris who singled home Corbin Olmstead to give the Ospreys the early, 2-0 advantage. When scoring in the first inning, the Ospreys are 13-3 this season.

Higdon, the second batter of the game, registered his seventh double of the year and second of the series. He has now hit safely in his last nine games. Olmstead was 3-for-4 with his 43rd and 44th RBI of the season, establishing a new career single-season high. In the process he extended his reached base streak to 36 games.

Karmeris kicked off a power surge in the top of the sixth with a solo home run to lead off the frame for his ninth home run of the season. It marked the sixth time this season he has led off the inning with a home run. A batter later, Chris Thibideau cracked his third home run of the series and his seventh of the season. The junior was 2-for-4 on the day and finished the series, 7-for-12 with three home runs, six RBIs, three runs scored and two stolen bases.

The only mishap from Drury came in the bottom of the third when he gave up a solo home run to Jay Hays, his first of the year. The Eagles scored two runs in the ninth before reliever Alex Smith induced the game-ending fly out for his first save of 2016 and the second of his career.

FGCU has now lost five of its last six A-Sun games.

In the field the Ospreys turned two double plays, to up their A-Sun leading total to 46.

The Ospreys return home for a three-game series against Lipscomb, a rematch of last year's Atlantic Sun Conference Championships game. The series opener is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Friday night at Harmon Stadium.
