SPARTANBURG, S.C. - For the second time this season, sophomore
Luise Intert clinched a victory against FGCU as North Florida women's tennis won 4-2 to claim its second straight Atlantic Sun Championship on Sunday afternoon at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
"It is great to see all of the hard work that we put in throughout the year pay off," said Intert. "What made the decision in the end is the heart that everyone put in on and off the court. I was happy to be able to clinch the match, but we all couldn't have done it without the support from each other and everyone involved."
Intert, who was named the tournament MVP, clinched a 4-3 match against the Eagles during the regular season which eventually helped UNF win the regular season title. Along with Intert, freshman
Rafaela Gomez and junior
Michelle Valdez also grabbed All-Tournament Team honors.
"I'm very proud of Luise for earning the MVP award and for clinching today," said head coach
Audra Cohen. "She has been a solid leader all year and her heart and determination spread through the team. It was fitting that she clinched today and I can't be more proud of the person she has become."
The doubles point featured back-and-forth sways in momentum, as teams split results on courts one and three.
Mariella Calderon and
Michelle Valdez defeated Laura Falceto Font and Elizabeth Means at the No. 3 slot by a score of 6-1, before FGCU won 6-3 on court one. With the score knotted 5-all on court two,
Luise Intert and
Rafaela Gomez battled to win two straight games and claim the doubles point, 7-5.
UNF raced out to a big lead in singles, taking the first set in four of the lower six singles matches. Freshman
Rafaela Gomez finished first on court three, defeating Julianna Curtis by a score of 6-4, 6-2 to put the Ospreys ahead 2-0. That lead swelled to 3-0 after senior
Mariella Calderon proved victorious on court six. FGCU then began to rally as the Eagles grabbed wins on the first two courts.
The score remained 3-2 for a lengthy time as neither team could grab consistent momentum. Junior
Quetzali Vazquez was battling on the No. 5 court, while Intert was taking on Means at No. 4. Intert started off strong with a 3-0 lead before Means battled back to tie it at 5-all. The Germany native then settled in to grab a 7-5 first-set win. Intert then cruised to a 6-3 win against Means to give UNF the championship.
With the victory, North Florida earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship and learns its opponent on Tuesday, May 3 on ncaa.com.
