SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Sophomore
Lasse Muscheites clinched the 4-0 win for North Florida men's tennis against Kennesaw State in the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun Championship on Saturday afternoon at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
North Florida now advances to face off with USC Upstate who upset No. 1 seed FGCU in the earlier match. USC Upstate got the best of the Ospreys during the regular season, 4-3 on the Spartans' home courts. The Ospreys have now advanced to the championship match for five straight years and are still searching for their first championship.
"First of all, it was a great team effort from all of us. The first match is not always easy playing away," said Muscheites. "I think we stuck to our games on every court. Even the guys who were down, had the other guys to clinch which was great. We are looking forward to coming out tomorrow and getting the A-Sun trophy."
The Ospreys opened the day with the doubles point to give them the advantage heading into singles.
Yannick Zuern and
Jack Findel-Hawkins paired up in the No. 1 position for the first time since the fall and downed the Owls, 6-3. The senior-freshman tandem of
Julian Bradley and
Sahil Deshmukh then won in the No. 3 spot by the same score.
Bradley took his strong play into singles action and quickly knocked off David Durham, 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 4 position. After a 6-3 win in the first set, Zuern then shut down Kennesaw State with a 6-0 win in the No. 3 match.
Kennesaw State was on the verge of grabbing a point in the No. 6 match, but Muscheites grabbed the victory to clinch the shut out. Muscheites had a tightly-contested 7-5 win in the first set before shutting out Manuel Castellanos, 6-0 for the win.
The championship match is set for 10 a.m. The victor will earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
