FORT MYERS, Fla. - North Florida women's basketball had three players score in double figures, but it was not enough as FGCU led from start to finish in a 75-50 victory in Alico Arena on Saturday afternoon.
North Florida's 50 points were the most scored on the Eagles during conference play as the last time FGCU gave up 50 points was December 28 in an overtime victory against Quinnipiac. Junior
Claire Ioannidis and sophomore
Sierra Shepherd each scored 13 points, while senior
Kadesia Johnson tallied 11 points with six rebounds and five assists. Off the glass, sophomore
Maiya Rumph and junior
Karrah Johnson each pulled down a game-high seven rebounds.
For the sixth time this season, the Ospreys shot above 40 percent from the field shooting at a 42 percent clip on 18-of-42 from the floor. It was just the second time this year though that the Blue and Grey went 50 percent or better from long range. UNF shot a season-best 66 percent at Stetson on Thursday.
FGCU opened the game with three straight long balls and took a lead it never relinquished. The Eagles went on to take a 24-8 lead after the first quarter. UNF opened the second frame with a pair of makes from the charity stripe and three-pointer from freshman
Hadley Kiefer to pull within 24-13, but it was as close as the visitors got for the game.
The Eagles owned a 37-20 halftime lead and had a 20-point lead for most of the third quarter. In the final frame, Shepherd hit a three-pointer at 6:04 to close the gap to 61-46, but FGCU eventually took its biggest lead of the game with 1:42 to play on three-pointer from Sydnei McCaskill.
FGCU got a basket from 10 of 11 players who saw the floor with eight hitting at least one bucket from long range led by 13 points from Whitney Knight. For the game, the Eagles shot 45 percent from the floor on 29-of-64 including 14 buckets from behind the arc. FGCU once again controlled the ball against UNF with just seven turnovers, but the Ospreys did capitalize with 10 points from the miscues.
UNF drops to 6-17 on the season and 2-6 in league action, while the Eagles remain undefeated in Atlantic Sun play at 8-0 and hold a 20-4 mark overall. The Ospreys now host Stetson as their long home game in a 16-day stretch. Game time on Wednesday, Feb. 10 is set for 7 p.m. at UNF Arena.
