JACKSONVILLE - Stetson converted 33 points off the Ospreys' 18 turnovers as the Hatters topped North Florida women's basketball, 67-56, on Wednesday evening at UNF Arena.
Junior
Claire Ioannidis topped the team for the 13th time this season with 13 points with nine coming in the second half. She also dished out three assists and picked up a steal. Senior
Kadesia Johnson recorded 12 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals, while
Karrah Johnson also scored double figures with 11 points - all of which came in the first half.
"We played two solid defensive quarters - the first and the third - but the second we didn't play well," said head coach Darrick
Gibbs. "In the fourth it came down to awareness. We lost the best player in the league, [Brianti
Saunders] on too many occasions and she burned us for it. Defensively we were solid, but obviously not good enough. We still gave up 67 points and a lot of that goes to our offense with 18 turnovers that led to almost half of their offense. We have to be better there."The game featured eight tie scores and eight lead changes with the Hatters taking the final one in the opening of the fourth quarter on a three-pointer from leading scorer Brianti Saunders. Stetson went 8-for-8 from the line down the stretch and scored 11 points off five UNF turnovers to make up the difference in the game.
In the opening frame, the visitors took the lead early, 9-4, but a 10-2 run by the Ospreys put UNF up 14-11 with 1:20 left in the frame. Stetson hit one triple in the span of five minutes to tie the game at 14-all, but a
Karrah Johnson jumper gave North Florida the edge heading into the end of the quarter.
Stetson quickly took back the lead in the second with a 13-6 run for a 33-22 lead with 2:57 left in the half. The Ospreys then went on a 9-2 run of their own to end the half, capped by a running jumper from Ioannidis to shrink the Hatters' lead, 35-31, heading into the break.
The third quarter saw four ties, with the final coming at the end of the quarter on a
Sierra Shepherd jumper, 45-45. From there though it was the visitors ball game as the Hatters held UNF to just five baskets in the final 10 minutes.
For the game, UNF shot 48 percent on 23-of-47, while Stetson went 45 percent from the field. The Hatters limited the home team's looks from long range as UNF was just 3-for-13 including going 0-for-8 in the second half.
Saunders led all scorers with 21 points, while McKenna Beach recorded 15. Aisha Turner added in 11 and Breana Bey wrapped up the double-digit scoring with 10 points. She also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds to help the Hatters own a 30-23 edge off the glass.
The Ospreys now hit the road for their next two games as they look for a sweep against Lipscomb on Saturday, Feb. 13. North Florida edged out the visiting Bisons, 78-70, in the first meeting between the two teams. Tip-off is set for 2:30 p.m. EST.
