JACKSONVILLEÂ -- The North Florida basketball team closes out the regular season Thursday at 7 p.m., against crosstown rival Jacksonville with the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season title on the line at historic Swisher Gymnasium. The game, which is part of the River City Rumble competition, is being broadcast on ESPN3 as well as on local radio at 1010XL AM/ 92.5 FM.Â
Â
The Ospreys (20-10, 9-4) are currently one game ahead of a trio of squads in second place including the Dolphins (16-14, 8-5). UNF has recovered from a four-game skid having posted back-to-back victories heading into the Rumble rematch. North Florida rallied for an 81-78 victory over USC Upstate on Saturday night as senior Demarcus Daniels led the way with 23 points followed by 18 points from fellow senior Beau Beech.
The win assured the Ospreys of a share of the regular season title along with a guaranteed home game in the quarterfinals of the upcoming Atlantic Sun Conference tournament. UNF is looking to become the first repeat regular season champion since Belmont in 2011 and 2012. With a victory, UNF would establish a new program record for regular season victories and also secure the No. 1 seed in the tournament.
There are several individual milestones within reach on Thursday. Dallas Moore is just 12 points shy of setting a new UNF single season scoring record and is also just 13 assists shy of the program's single season mark. Chris Davenport needs six points to reach 1,000 for his career while Daniels enters the contest just 12 points shy 1,000.Â
Jacksonville, who is tied with FGCU and NJIT, has dropped three of their last four after posting a five-game win streak. The Dolphins fell 73-58 to NJIT on Saturday marking their first home loss of the season. JU is lead by Kori Babineaux at 18.6 points per game. In the first meeting between the two squads on Jan. 9 at UNF Arena, North Florida posted an 83-68 victory despite Babineaux finishing with 30 points. Daniels countered for UNF with 22 points and 10 boards.
Thursday's game will mark UNF's first visit to Swisher Gymnasium since the 2009-10 season, a 62-55 loss. With the game already sold out, Osprey fans are encouraged to go to UNF Arena for a watch party on the video boards. Admission is free to the event. Concessions will be open and featuring a number of food and drink specials.
Following the contest, North Florida will host a quarterfinal game at UNF Arena on Tuesday (Mar. 1) at 7:30 p.m. against a to be determined opponent. Tickets for Atlantic Sun Tournament games at UNF Arena are on sale by contacting the UNF Athletic Ticket Office or at this link.
