AUBURN, Ala. - No. 35 Auburn was too much for North Florida women's tennis as the Tigers grabbed a 5-1 victory at the Yarborough Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
"The girls competed really well. The energy and intensity displayed on every court helped the rest of the team stay in the match and make good decisions throughout the rest of the match, especially lower in the line up," said assistant coach Fernando Guillen. "Despite the result, we leave with a positive experience that will help the girls grow as tennis players and that will make the team stronger for the rest of the season."
Junior Michelle Valdez was the lone Osprey to clinch a victory. The Dominican Republic native, picked up a hard-fought three set win, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8) in the No. 4 position.
The home team swept through doubles play to take the early lead before wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches made it a 3-0 match.
"Overall I think we competed well today and we made progress in the right direction as a program," said head coach Audra Cohen. "I was a little disappointed with doubles because we could have started with more energy and set a stronger tone from the beginning. However, I am happy with the way the girls fought back and forth and started the singles with a lot of energy."
Noemi Hemmerich kept UNF in the match with her singles match in No. 1 after picking up a second set victory, but Pleun Burgmans won the final set to clinch the match for Auburn.
UNF now travels to Troy for a noon match on Sunday.
