Gomez, Valdez Move to Back Draw Quarterfinals at ITA Regional

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore Rafaela Gomez and senior Michelle Valdez had great showings for North Florida women's tennis at the ITA Southeast Regional Championship as they advanced to the Back Draw Quarterfinal on Saturday at the Ring Tennis Complex.

Gomez took down Arianne de Winter, 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round of the Back Draw singles bracket. She then faced off with Georgia State's Daniela Ramirez where she was once again victorious, 6-1, 6-2. Senior Michelle Valdez grabbed a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Gabriela Ferreira of FIU. Valdez then defeated Vanja Klaric (USF) to move on in the Regional.

On Sunday, Gomez will take on a familiar foe in Sofia Ferding from Stetson, while Valdez plays Georgia's Caroline Brinson.

Irinia Karangozishvili also won her first round match up against UCF's Monica Matias, 6-4, 7-5. The junior then took on Kristin Rehse of Georgia State where she dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision.
