JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida women's soccer team fell to Furman 1-0 on Friday night at Hodges Stadium in a non-conference matchup.
Â
The Ospreys (1-7-0) kept pace with the Paladins (7-2-0) for the majority of the match, but a goal in the 48th minute proved to be the eventual game-winner.
Â
"I thought the first 45 minutes was some of the best soccer we've played this season against a very good Furman team," said head coach Robin Confer. "Moving forward, we need to play 90 minutes like this and stay consistent. It's all about focusing on the details every time on the field."
Â
The Ospreys started strong in the first half, earning several corner kicks and maintaining possession in the Furman half, but were unable to capitalize on their chances.
Â
In the 15th minute, senior Lanie Keating fired a shot from just outside the box, but the laser shot ricocheted off the crossbar and out of harm's way.
Â
In the 21st minute, the Ospreys earned a penalty kick, but the Paladin keeper guessed correctly and was able to block the Keating attempt.
Â
In the 24th minute, sophomore Sarah Wasser had the ball just inside the Furman box, but her shot sailed just over the crossbar. The teams closed the first half scoreless.
Â
Furman broke the stalemate in the 48th minute, when Stephanie DeVita delivered an upper-90s shot to the top right of the net from about 16 yards out, giving the Paladins the lead and the eventual game winner.
Â
The Ospreys battled through the second half, in the 77th minute, junior Gabrielle Ligouri delivered a big free kick that got past the keeper, but a foul against the Ospreys called off the potential equalizer.
Â
North Florida turns their attention to Georgia Southern on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Hodges Stadium for their final non-conference matchup.
