JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida men's soccer team wrapped up its preseason exhibition schedule with a 1-1 tie against the College of Charleston. Senior goalkeeper
Kyle Nasta made 10 saves and played all 90 minutes.
In a back-and-forth battle all night, the Cougars finally found the back of the net with just 3:34 remaining to tie the game at one. Nico Rittmeyer came up with a loose ball deep in the Osprey zone and was able to get a foot on the game-tying goal.
The Ospreys jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by
Alex Morrell. The Atlantic Sun Preseason All-Conference selection cleaned up a furious North Florida attack in the 16
th minute. Senior Helge Pietchmann rung a shot off the far right post that deflected all the way out to the left side of the net where Morrell was waiting. Pietschmann was credited with the assist on the lone Osprey goal.
Nasta showed flashes of brilliance keeping the Cougars off the scoreboard for nearly the whole match. He made nine of his 10 saves in the second half. Nasta has recorded double-digit saves in twice in his regular season career.
The first half was dominated by the Ospreys who got of six shots compared to just two by the Cougars. The College of Charleston offense awoke in the final 45 minutes firing 10 shots on goal including the game-tying tally in the 87
th minute. For the game, the Cougars held a 16-15 advantage in total shots.
Despite the tie, the two teams did not engage in an overtime session and concluded the game after 90 minutes of regulation play.
The Ospreys open up the 2015 season at home on Friday in the first game of the Mike Gibbs Memorial Tournament. North Florida will play two games in three days starting with a match against Appalachian State on Friday at 8:00 p.m. The defending Mike Gibbs Memorial Tournament Champions will conclude the weekend with a game against Georgia State at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
