2015 Golden Spikes Semifinalists DURHAM, N.C. – For the second-straight year, the North Florida baseball team has a semifinalist for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award. Redshirt sophomore
Donnie Dewees was one of 21 players listed as a semifinalist for the award annually given out to the top amateur baseball player in the U.S.
Dewees joins former teammate
Drew Weeks who was a semifinalist for last year's Golden Spikes award. Weeks went on to get drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the seventh round of the 2014 MLB First Year Player Draft.
This announcement officially marks the opening of voting for amateur baseball fans from across the country on GoldenSpikesAward.com. As part of this selection process, all voters will be asked to choose three players from the list of names. Voting will be open until Friday, May 29.
Dewees, the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year, has put together one of the most prolific seasons in North Florida history. He has broken single season school marks in hits (103), runs (84), triples (7) and total bases (184). He leads the Atlantic Sun in almost every offensive category and ranks in the top-10 nationally in 11 different categories.
Earlier this season, Dewees held the nation's longest hitting streak of 31 games and has two hit streaks of 16 or more this season. He has helped the Ospreys to their first Atlantic Sun Conference Regular Season Championship and an D-1 era best 44 wins.
USA Baseball officials will announce the list of finalists for the 2015 Golden Spikes Award on Tuesday, June 2. To select the finalists, the list of semifinalists is sent to a voting body consisting of past Golden Spikes Award winners, past USA Baseball National Team coaches and press officers, members of media that closely follow the amateur game, select professional baseball personnel, and current USA Baseball staff, representing a group of more than 200 voters in total.
