Box Score Boxscore JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Despite close sets for much of the singles competition, No. 67 University of North Florida men's tennis dropped a 4-0 match to No. 73 Troy on Senior Day in what was also the Ospreys' regular season finale.
"I'm proud of the guys today; we tried our hardest, but it did not go our way," said head coach Mark Finnegan. "Even though we did not get the result we wanted, it was a great, tough match to helps us get ready for next weekend's Atlantic Sun Tournament."
In doubles, UNF found themselves trailing after Troy won on the first two courts in order to take a 1-0 lead.
Lasse Muscheites and
Zach Goldberg fell 8-3 to Pablo Moreno and Giovani Samaha at No. 1 doubles. Andy Lau and Gabriel Dias quickly followed with an 8-2 win over
Julian Bradley and
Norbert Nemcsek on the No. 2 court.
UNF put up a tough fight at the No. 3 court with
Alberto De Meo and
Yannick Zuern holding a 7-5 lead on Hassan Ndayishimye and Calum McKinlay when the doubles point was won.
Five of the six singles matches had a close first set with two courts winning 6-4 and three others being decided by 7-6 scores. However, UNF went down 2-0 after Muscheites was edged out by Lau 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Moreno held off Goldberg on the No. 5 court 6-2, 7-5. Meanwhile, Zuern fell 7-6 (4), 7-5 to a quick Ndayishimye at the No. 2 spot.
"Zach showed a lot of character today, competing while not feeling good," said Finnegan.
In other singles matches, Nemcsek fought back to force a third set with Dias on the No. 1 court. Bradley had emerged with a 7-6 (3) first set win against Daniel Bustamante at No. 4 singles, while De Meo was narrowly edged out 7-6 (7) by Samaha in the first set on the No. 6 court.
"Norbert went toe-to-toe with an excellent player, so I'm glad he had a good Senior Day," said Finnegan.
UNF returns to action in next week's Atlantic Sun Tournament that takes place at the UNF Tennis Complex. As the No. 2 seed, UNF has a first-round bye and automatically advances to the semifinal round that is Apr. 18. The Ospreys' possible opponents will be determined after the last three Atlantic Sun matches are played on Saturday.
