Â
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – No. 69 University of North Florida men's tennis blanked Kennesaw State 4-0 on Thursday at the UNF Tennis Complex in a match that started and ended with inclement weather.
Â
"I'm really proud how the guys acted today," said head coach Mark Finnegan. "We had a lot of adversity before the match, but everyone stuck together and came away with a good win. Kennesaw State did a good of competing and are a well-coached team."
Â
Right as the first point of doubles was being played, rain came down on the courts, forcing a two-hour, 15-minute delay. All of the singles matches were supposed to be played, but a lightning strike near the UNF Tennis Complex occurred not long after the Ospreys won the last point and the match was called.
Â
UNF won a close-fought doubles point. Lasse Muscheites and Zach Goldberg edged out David Durham and Drew Wendel 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. However, Kennesaw State evened the doubles advantage with Manuel Castellanos and Alejandro Valencia taking an 8-5 win over Yannick Zuern and Alberto De Meo on the No. 3 court. The Ospreys got the doubles point on Julian Bradley and Norbert Nemcsek's 8-5 No. 2 doubles triumph against Jorge Wilton and Sam Pritchard.
Â
Goldberg took the first singles victory by defeating Durham 6-1, 6-3 on the No. 5 court and giving UNF the 2-0 lead. The Ospreys' last two points came close to each other. De Meo cruised past Wilton 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles, while Nemcsek held off Pritchard 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 1 position.
Â
UNF returns to action on Saturday against USC Upstate at 2 p.m., at the UNF Tennis Complex. Admission is free to all UNF home matches.
