JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida swim team began its 2015-16 campaign this afternoon hosting a tri-meet with Georgia Southern and Florida International University at Semmes Aquatic Center.
Â
The defending Conference USA champion, FlU (2-0) defeated the Ospreys 168-90 and Georgia Southern (1-1), 155-103. North Florida (0-2) also fell victim to Georgia Southern, 171-90.
Â
The Osprey team that features a team of 13 newcomers provided plenty of highlights throughout the afternoon. Among the many bright spots was the performance of senior Amy Taylor who turned in a first place finish in the 200 butterfly and a pair of second place finishes in the 1000 Free and the 500 Free. Her 200 butterfly time of 2:06.16 was a career best. The Ospreys top distance swimmer from a year ago turned in times of 10:27.84 and 5:04.14 in the 1000 and 500 freestyle, respectively.
Â
Among the impressive newcomers was freshman Kiana Albert who placed fourth in the 200 backstroke. Her time of 2:11.23 was faster than any 200 backstroke time swam in a dual meet by an Osprey in over two years. North Florida also got a nice debut from Freshman Emily Draskovich, who placed second in the 100 butterfly. She out-touched Georgia Southern freshman Mykala Arnold by a hundredth of a second.
Â
In the meet's final event, freshman Nicole Nesto, sophomore Taylor Schmidinger, Albert and Taylor combined to finish third in the 400 freestyle relay. The quartet posted a time of 3:41.14.
Â
The Ospreys will be back in the water next Saturday hosting CCSA foes, North Carolina A&T and Campbell at 1:00 p.m.
