Golden Goal in 102nd minute Gives @OspreyWSOC 2-1 Win over Davidson
9/28/2014 7:46:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Jacksonville, Fla. – A free kick golden goal from junior Lanie Keating gave the North Florida women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Davidson Sunday at Hodges Stadium in the final non-conference game this season.
Â
The goal came just over one minute into the second overtime period. Following a Davidson foul, Keating drilled a 35 yard free kick into the top center of the box for her first goal of the season.
Â
"We've had games similar to that throughout this year and we've learned from that. We know that if something happens, we need a response, and I'm happy that the team responded and it went the right way," said head coach Robin Confer, who earned her first career win at home. "We've had some unlucky results, but that's part of the game. We try to take those moments and learn from them.
Â
The Ospreys (2-9-0) started the match with their first goal in over 400 minutes of play. Freshman Hannah Parado took a Sarah Wasser feed on the right side of the box, then found the high left side of the net in the 68th minute.
Â
Davidson (3-7-1) managed to equalize in the 87th minute, when Stephanie Piperno got a 1-one-1 opportunity against senior goalkeeper Megan Dorsey. Piperno managed to get just past Dorsey and find the back of the net.
Â
The Wildcats almost ended the match towards the end of the first overtime period, when a defensive miscue led to an open goal. But freshman Jess Kinlaw was able to make the stop and save the match for the Ospreys.
Â
"I'm so proud of them and the effort that they gave today,' added Confer. "They easily could've given up. They fought through it, and what a great strike by Lanie to win it."
Â
The Ospreys led the shot advantage over the Wildcats 13-12 as well as the shots on goal advantage at 5-4.
Â
The Ospreys are back in Atlantic Sun Conference action next weekend. They travel to Nashville, Tenn. to face Lipscomb on Friday, before heading to Highland Heights, Ky. on Sunday to take on Northern Kentucky.Â
