
Osprey #TF Logs Solid Day One at A-Sun Championships

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's and women's track and field team got off to a solid start on day one of the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Friday at Hodges Stadium.
"I'm pleased with the way our athletes competed today," said head coach Jeff Pigg. "It was great to see our young team go out there and post some solid results."
In her first 10,000-meter race, junior Andelka Tancic earned silver medal honors with a time of 37:36.70. Â Freshman Lauren Gonzalez ran a personal best to finish in third with a time 38:07.28, while junior Alyssa Brand finished right behind in fourth with a time of 38:19.91.
Sophomore Meg Simon hit her collegiate best in the pole vault, clearing 3.66m (12-00.00) to finish on the podium in third place.
Christina Johnson finished third in her heat to advance into tomorrow's 100m finals with a time of 14.37.
After posting a qualifying time for the east regionals last weekend, junior Elle Baker cross the line at 11:02.84 to finish in fourth in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase.
In the women's long jump, sophomore Laila Foster reached a mark of 5.72m (18-09.25) to finish in fourth.
The women currently sit in fourth place as a team after Friday's action, which saw six events scored. The Ospreys have 28 points, just 4 points fewer than third-place East Tennessee State.
After battling injuries throughout the outdoor season, freshman Clayton Washburn earned silver medal honors in the men's pole vault after clearing a solid 4.63 (15-02.25)
In the men's 3000-meter steeplechase, freshman Michael Damato continued to get the job done. A standout in cross country and distance track runner, Damato beat his personal best by nearly 25 seconds, crossing the line in fourth place with a time of 9:32.57.
In his first and last 10,000-meter run, senior Chris Haynes posted a solid 32:14.29 to finish in sixth. Sophomore Justin Bryan finished right behind in seventh, crossing the line in 32:20.60.
UNF had a trio of short-distance hurdlers advance out of the preliminary rounds, as freshman Marques Burgman (14.72), freshman Darius Vanblount (14.74) and senior Dante Bouldin (15.04) moved into tomorrow's 110mh finals. Burgman's performance was just .01 off the school record.
With six events scored, the men of sit in fifth place with 21 points and are just a half point behind fourth place Lipscomb.
"We've had a great track meet so far," said Pigg. "Everything from our new track to our staff has been phenomenal, which really has made this a good experience for the athletes." Â
Competition will begin tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. beginning with the men's decathlon. Running events begin at 5 p.m. with the 4x100m relay.
