JACKSONVILLE, Fla.— The No. 1 seed University of North Florida women's tennis team fell 4-3 to fourth-seeded Stetson in the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship on Sunday at the UNF Tennis Complex.
In doubles, the Ospreys lost the doubles point after falling at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. At No. 3 doubles,
Esther Zuniga and
Mariella Calderon dropped an 8-6 decision to Eveline Lepinay and Lindsey Cable.
Marina Cunningham and
Taylor Hollander had their 11-match win streak halted as they fell 8-7 (11-9) to Andrea Crespo and Isabella Fernandez at the No. 2 position.
Simona Weymar and
Rebeca Pereira grabbed the only doubles victory for UNF by defeating Diana Bukajeva and MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell at the top-spot.
In singles,
Michelle Valdez tied the score up at 1-1 when she downed Stauffer-MacDowell 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 4 position. The Hatters grabbed wins at No. 5 and No. 2 singles to move ahead 3-1. The Ospreys fought back grabbing wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles to even up the score 3-3. Weymar defeated Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Tennis' Player of the Year Bukajeva 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 at the top-spot, while Cunningham posted a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Fernandez at No. 3.
The match came down to a decisive three-set thriller between Pereira and Carolina Meregalli, an individual match that needed a full 48 hours to finish after back-to-back days of rain delays. Pereira fell 6-4 in the first set, but rebounded by claiming the second set, 6-2. Pereira was up 4-3 in the final set before Meregalli rallied for a 7-5 win to clinch the match for the Hatters.
The Ospreys finished the season with a 15-6 overall record.
