
ASun Title Defense Begins with Win Over Mercer for #SandVB

FT. MYERS, Fla. -- The top-seeded North Florida sand volleyball team opened action in their attempt to win a third consecutive Atlantic Sun Tournament championship with a hard fought 3-2 victory over Mercer on Friday afternoon at FGCU's Estero Community Park.
The Ospreys (17-5) extended their undefeated streak in ASun Tournament play to eight matches after edging the third-seeded Bears. The win also marked UNF's seventh straight over MU and allowed UNF to advance to a meeting with crosstown rival Jacksonville on Saturday.
Mercer struck first in the match after earning a 2-0 (21-18, 21-16) win at the No. 4 position by Hannah Sorenson/Erin Brett over Julie Trembley/Britt Claessens. The Ospreys evened the score at 1-1 as No. 5 tandem Emily Strack/Allison Shirley outlasted Caroline Carlton/Demi-Shay Watchorn in three sets, 21-18, 14-21, 15-11.
UNF's No. 3 pair Cameron McGuire/Tanner Garbutt gave the team its first lead by sweeping past MU's Emily Rochefort/Zoe Becton, 2-0 (21-18, 21-17). Atlantic Sun Confernce Pair of the Year, Anna Budinska and Cari Whitmire, sealed the win for North Florida at the No. 2 spot with a 2-0 (21-13, 24-22) decision against Tori Penrod/Emma Peel. The Bears other point came from their top pairing as Natalie Braun/Jamie Duffy edged UNF's Dagnija Medina/Kim Hildreth in a thrilling three-set battle, 2-1 (26-24, 15-21, 15-13).
North Florida meets JU on Saturday at 9 a.m. in the winner's bracket while Mercer waits to face the winner of Friday's elimination match between No. 2 seed Stetson and No. 5 seed FGCU at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
