JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida Department of Athletics held its annual Athletic Awards Banquet Wednesday, April 16 at UNF's Adam W. Herbert University Center celebrating and honoring the athletic accomplishments for the 2013-14 season.
Senior Simona Weymar (women's tennis) and junior Drew Weeks (baseball) earned the Athlete of the Year honors, while senior Anna Budinska (indoor/sand volleyball) and junior Casey Caronis (men's soccer) were named Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Freshmen Dallas Moore (basketball) and Ashia Kerr (softball) garnered the Newcomer of the Year awards, while senior Raneisha Lamar was presented with the the Osprey Spirit award by the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC).
The Osprey Spirit Award was created by the SAAC in an effort to have a peer-driven honor at the banquet. The SAAC created the criteria for the annual honor that will recognize a student-athlete who exemplifies dedication to UNF Athletics and promotes spirit and pride within their team and the Athletics Department. Lamar is a member of the UNF women's basketball team
In addition, the men's soccer team was recognized with the "Most Improved Team/Individual" honor and the men's basketball team claimed the "Best Team/Individual Performance" for their overtime road win over ASun co-champion Mercer.
Robert Harper, the "Voice of the Ospreys", served as the emcee for the event, which unofficially marks the conclusion of the 2013-14 athletic season. Along with dinner and the announcement of the department awards, other highlights of the evening included recognition of all UNF senior student-athletes and the department's endowed scholarships as well as a season highlight video.
