JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—The University of North Florida women's team sent senior
Simona Weymar out with a regular season Atlantic Sun title sweeping Lipscomb, 7-0, on Saturday morning at the UNF Tennis Complex.
"I am so proud of this team for finishing the regular season undefeated in conference." said head coach Audra Cohen. "I feel like we are just starting to play our best tennis and we are ready for next week's challenge. Today was a special day for our senior, Simona, she has grown as a person and a player over he career at UNF and I cannot be more proud of her. She is a winner and she will be missed."
In doubles,
Mariella Calderon and
Esther Zuniga claimed a quick 8-1 victory over Lorena Djuknic and Sierra Troxel at the No. 3 position. Weymar and her partner
Rebeca Pereira then downed Deahna Welcher and Jenny Borck 8-4 at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point.
Taylor Hollander and
Marina Cunningham extended their win streak to 11 by defeating Laura Kent and Melissa Kromer 8-5 at the No. 2 spot.
The Ospreys grabbed straight-set wins at all six singles positions. Zuniga beat Kromer 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 to get things started followed quickly by
Quetzali Vazquez' 6-1, 6-0 win over Troxel at No. 6. Cunningham earned the match clinching point by trouncing Kent 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 3. At No. 1, the Weymar posted a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Welcher in her final regular season home appearance. UNF rounded out the sweep with Hollander besting Borck 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4, and Pereira topping Djuknic, 6-3, 6-4 at the 5th position.
North Florida will be the top seed in the Atlantic Sun Tournament, which begins Thursday, Apr. 17 at the UNF Tennis Complex. As the top seed and regular season champion, UNF earned a bye into the semifinals and will face the winner of Thursday's Stetson/Mercer match on Friday, April 18 at 2:30 p.m.
