JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—The No. 67-ranked University of North Florida men's tennis team claimed a share of the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season title after defeating Lipscomb 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex.
"Capturing the regular season title this weekend was unbelievable, but this weekend was really about the history of this program," said
Norbert Nemcsek. "It was great to see all the alumni coming back and the excitement they had about the program. (Head coaches) Mark (Finnegan) and Audra (Cohen) did an awesome job organizing this weekend's events. We are very excited to play the conference championship at home next weekend and we will try to defend the nest one last time this season."
In doubles,
Caio Gomes and
Yannick Zuern made quick work defeating Miguel Cortez and Stuart Tierney, 8-2, at the top spot. At No. 3,
Bernardo Craveiro and
Pablo Tellez downed David Salazar and Nacor Ibanez, 8-4, to clinch the doubles point. The newly-paired duo of Nemcsek and
Zach Goldberg beat Daniel Hernandez and Rob Mitchell, 8-5, at No. 2 to complete the doubles sweep.
In singles, Tellez grabbed the Ospreys first point on the board with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ibanez at No. 6. At No. 3, Zuern posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Salazar giving UNF a 3-0 lead. Nemcsek clinched the match by besting Hernandez 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2. Lipscomb countered with a win at No. 4 trimming the Osprey lead to 4-1, but Gomes collected UNF's final singles point at No. 1 by topping Mitchell 6-0, 7-5.
North Florida will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Atlantic Sun Championship tournament, which begins Thursday, Apr. 17 at the UNF Tennis Complex. As the second seed and regular season co-champion, UNF earned a bye into the semifinals and will face the winner of Thursday's Florida Gulf Coast/Mercer match on Friday, April 18 at 11:30 a.m.
