JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—The University of North Florida swept USC Upstate 4-0 on Sunday morning at the UNF Tennis Complex, but fell 4-0 to No. 36 Florida State Sunday evening at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
"I'm impressed with how well we took care of business this morning," said head coach Audra Cohen. "We were confident and played aggressive from the start on every court. The former UNF team would've started much slower in these type of matches."
The Ospreys started with singles against USC Upstete in order to keep the morning match short in preparation for the evening match at Florida State.
Taylor Hollander grabbed the first point with a quick 6-1, 6-1 victory over Talia Rojas at No. 4 singles. At the No. 6 spot,
Rebeca Pereira made quick work of Sarah Vande Berg as she downed her 6-1, 6-1.
Esther Zuniga put the Ospreys up 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Taylor Cohen at No. 3 position. At No. 5 singles,
Mariella Calderon clinched the match for North Florida by beating Lindsey Buenger 6-1, 6-1.
At Florida State, the Ospreys dropped the doubles point with the Seminoles claiming wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. However, Hollander and
Marina Cunningham were up 7-4 against Duda Santos and Majlena Pederson on the No. 2 court when the doubles point was clinched.
In singles, the Ospreys put up a strong fight, but was unable to secure a point as Florida State won at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 positions. However, two of the three unfinished matches were going to need a third set. At No. 4 singles,
Michelle Valdez forced a third-set against Daniela Schippers after falling 6-3 in the first and winning the second 6-4, but the third-set was not played due to the match already clinched. At the No. 6 spot, Calderon had won the first set 6-3 over Santos before falling in the second 6-3. Santos was up 1-0 in the third set when the match was called. Meanwhile, Hollander had taken Kristina Schleich to a first-set tiebreaker at No. 5 singles, but fell 7-6 in that set. Hollander was down 2-1 when the match was called.
"This was a competitive match and I feel the score was not telling of the battle," said Audra Cohen. "We fought very hard at every position and we earned opportunities to win sets on almost every singles court. This match can only make us tougher as we approach the height of our conference season."
The Ospreys return to action next weekend as they travel to Georgia to face Kennesaw State on Friday, April 4 at 1 p.m., at Fair Oaks Park.
