DeLand, Fla. – The North Florida women's soccer team struck first but ultimately fell 2-1 in a hard-fought road contest to the Stetson Hatters in Deland, Fla.
Â
The Ospreys (5-10-1, 3-2-1 A-Sun) ended their three-game win streak and are now third in the Atlantic Sun standings; they have already clinched their spot in the A-Sun postseason tournament.
Â
"We knew coming into this game Stetson was going to come out strong and with intensity and unfortunately we didn't match theirs in the first half," said head coach Robin Confer.
Â
The Ospreys struck first in the 12th minute of play when freshman Kayla Gray methodically moved the ball towards the left side of the six-yard box before chipping it up to sophomore Alexis Bredeau who headed the ball in for her first goal of the season.
Â
The Hatters (4-11-1, 2-4-0 A-Sun) found the equalizer in the 20th minute, when Carmen Bernecker delivered a free kick into the box, it was passed left by Danielle Hurme before Mara Keomanivane finished in the center of the net.
Â
Stetson took the lead for good in the 35th minute, when Bernecker delivered on another set piece and found Hurme who headed it in from 15 yards away for the eventual game winner.
Â
The Ospreys had some sporadic chances throughout a second half that was interrupted by a temporary power outage, sending the pitch into darkness. UNF created several chances in the final 10 minutes following the resume of play, but could not find the equalizer.
Â
"They battled hard and created some good chances and we talked about how they were good on set pieces so we are disappointed to give up two goals on set pieces," added Confer. "We need to be better in some areas and we will address that in training this week to prepare for a tough JU team."
The Hatters held the overall shot advantage 18-13, while it was even with on-goal attempts, 7-7.
North Florida is back in action in their final regular-season contest next Friday, they host cross-town rival Jacksonville in the River City Rumble at Hodges Stadium at 8 p.m.
