JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team travels to Orlando for its first road match of the season as the Ospreys take on in-state foe UCF on Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. at the UCF Soccer and Track Complex.
North Florida enters the match with a 1-0-1 overall record. The unbeaten record is the best start to the season for the Ospreys since 2002. In 2002, North Florida opened the season with a tie and then proceeded to win the next three matches to start 3-0-1.
The Ospreys claimed first place in the Mike Gibbs Memorial Tournament, co-hosted with crosstown rival Jacksonville. North Florida finished with a win and a tie for four points, just ahead of Western Illinois (3 points). Valparaiso (2 points) claimed third, while JU (1 point) finished in fourth.
For their efforts in the Mike Gibbs Memorial, Alex Morrell was named Offensive Most Valuable Player, while Christopher Bush was deemed Defensive MVP. Jay Bolt, Pedro Carneiro, Casey Caronis and Brad Sienkiewicz were also named to the All-Tournament Team. Bush's efforts were recognized by the Atlantic Sun Conference as the transfer was named Defensive Player of the Week – the first player in North Florida men's soccer history to earn the honor.
Morrell leads the North Florida offense with four points. The sophomore has a pair of goals, netting a goal in each of the first two matches of the season. Bolt is second on the team with two points after scoring the match-winning goal against Western Illinois. Simen Solstad registered the first assist of the season for North Florida, helping out on Morrell's first goal of the season.
At goalkeeper, Brad Sienkiewicz has been solid. The graduate student has allowed just two goals in 200:00 minutes between the posts. Sienkiewicz has eight saves and boasts a 0.90 goals against average.
The Ospreys and Knights have met on the soccer pitch eight times in program history with UCF holding a decisive 7-1-0 advantage in the series. UNF is 0-5-0 in Orlando.
